Daox - You should be an automotive engineer. I used to be for a long time. You've got that mindset. Your mindset is better than most of the existing automotive engineers, who should instead work at a nail salon. My only contribution to this thread is that, to make blind measurements like you did with the dough, engineers use clay. However, when they don't have ready access to clay, they run out to wallyworld and buy play-doh. Works like a charm and is cheap. Probably more play-doh being used for these type of measurements than clay.
