We had a little break from the crazy bitter cold we've had lately. So, I took the chance to install the weather stripping that I ended up getting. The only real place I found 1" weather stripping was mcmaster-carr. They have a very nice selection of different weather striping sizes and shapes.

    https://www.mcmaster.com/catalog/125/3613

I ended up going with part number 93085K84, which is a big D profile. The length is 5ft.

The profile is about 1" x 1" which should be plenty big for our application.

So, I brought it outside, cleaned up the car, and started sticking it to the underside of the hood. I didn't really like the idea of putting the weather stripping on the bottom because I think it'll get in the way when working on the car.

I ended up cutting my 5ft length of weather stripping as shown. Its not real pretty, but I think its going to work really well.

It now is a bit difficult to close the hood. I dropped it from the normal height (~8"), but have to shove it for it to latch properly.

I've driven for a few days with the new hood gasket. I am liking it. It has helped increase my WAI temperatures about 5-10F. I used to see a solid 40F above ambient. Now, I am seeing a fairly steady 50F above ambient.

Have a pic of the weather strip with the hood closed?

Here is a shot from inside work haha... its raining out and I didn't feel like going outside. You really can't tell there is a gasket in there at all. None of it protrudes at all.

Here are some close up shots I took today. As you can see from the snow, the gasket material sits back a bit.

Daox - You should be an automotive engineer. I used to be for a long time. You've got that mindset. Your mindset is better than most of the existing automotive engineers, who should instead work at a nail salon. My only contribution to this thread is that, to make blind measurements like you did with the dough, engineers use clay. However, when they don't have ready access to clay, they run out to wallyworld and buy play-doh. Works like a charm and is cheap. Probably more play-doh being used for these type of measurements than clay.

Thanks! I've been messing around with cars for quite some time, and enjoy it quite a bit if its not noticeable.

Hmmm I might be interested in trying this.

It's been a cold winter here (more so than usual), and fuel economy has been noticeably worse.

I'm lucky to get it down to 5.8 l/100 km... I think that's just over 40 mpg.

Normally, it's pretty standard for me to get well under 5... but not when it's -22 .

It seems like the fit and finish on the newer models is much better than the '14s, I've noticed the hood gaps and door gaps look smaller and more uniform on the newer models... anyone else notice this?

The 2019 I have still has a pretty big gap between the hood and the rest of the car. I'm planning on doing this idea to seal the panel to it's surroundings at some point.

I've sealed the hood gap and it actually... Did nothing for my gas mileage. I'm confused by this and just removed the stripping entirely
