This time they are blaming the hotspot (after their 4th diagnostic attempt). i asked the service manager if he was sure, and he said "i hope so". at this point those are not very comforting words.

Not sure how your aftermarket hotspot device could effect your car's engine like that.


I used to teather my cell phone to my playstation 3 for data and gaming downloads, and the cellphone got red hot, but not the playstation just using the "wi fi" connection

Yikes that's dangerous, and to think they have this device to help control max speed, etc. for parents and their teenage drivers. Go figure this thing is far more dangerous than any teenage driver!

On my previous car (Ford) I had all the lights come on, check engine light, the ABS and I freaked out thinking I had major problems but then doscovered that it was the Cheap $10 Chinese ODB2 bluetooth computer that I had been using with Android Torque to tell me my real-time gas mileage.

As soon as I disconnected the gadget all the error lights went away and the car went back to normal. Those ODB2 gadgets can cause all sorts of weird errors and issues so certainly keep that thing unplugged for at least 2 weeks and see if your problem goes away. If i ever get a check engine light I would plug in the gadget just to I can pull the code but I dont advise anyone to drive around 24/7 with one of those plugged in.

And maybe take your car to AutoZone or any auto parts that offers to test your battery for free and make sure that you dont have a weak battery.

My thoughts exactly. Any external conflict that would cause them a service check would normally result in a fee. You are lucky.

My scan gauge plugs into the obd2 port with no issues. But that's a proven device.

Oops .. it has a [rechargeable?] internal battery.

Does anybody know what is the maximum ampere the +ve line of the OBD port is capable of? I think the OBD port was not designed for charging batteries.

IMHO that thing is drawing out too much current causing the problem.

Same! Just happened to me last week with an OBD-II bluetooth adapter in a 2005 Camry. ABS light started flashing on the first start-up!

The ScanGauge-II and -E are the only OBD devices I've used that haven't caused any problems on any car.
