Probably be easier to just find (or make) a turbo setup to fit the Mirage rather than put in an EcoBoost. But it is a fun thought!

Suzuki M16a - 1,6 I4 NA - 125-135 hp

The only motor to ever ever drop in the Mirage is the turbo 4 cylinder they have in the R5 Mirage. That one will fit snug, not sure my feelings on Ford products.

I wish they would sell the R5 for a street legal version, but they won't of course.

I understand the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost suffers problems with valves. I don't see that it would be a good choice, but I'm sure some folks are big fans of the design.

If you really wanted to get crazy, get a Smart car drivetrain and fit it to the rear. It might even fix alignment haha.

Cobrajet brought up an interesting point in the 2017 thread, that in order to put in a bigger engine it would change weight distribution. Brakes, chassis & suspension would need improving.

But Mitsubishi said they improved the brakes by making them bigger. They also claimed improvements to the springs & dampers. Why, we're practically halfway there.

So what else would be needed to put in a larger motor? Can anyone measure out the size of an Evo motor to compare to the Mirage engine bay? Would this really take some heavy fabricating?

I know I'm not the first to think of this. I saw some pic of a Mirage here with its front-end dismantled.

What else would you include? What size motor? AWD?

The Smart Fortwo used a version of this motor mounted at the rear axle. Wouldn't it be fun to do that for the Mirage? Two engines - front and rear.

Just think of the balanced handling. Also, one engine could be used for efficient motoring, two for fun.

PS: One wrecked Fortwo could be the donor for the transplant.
PPS: Finally, it might just be rated for towing.

Citroen did this years ago to make the 2CV 4WD

Cooper build a couple of prototypes of twin engined Minis back in the day.
They just used some standart drivetrains and put them in the back.
And the first Toyota MR2s were basically a Corolla FWD drivetrains placed behind the seats.

I think that a 3A92 and a smart drivetrain would very hard to synchronise. But 2 equal 3A92 drivetrains.
A twin engine Mirage could be a fun car and with two 3A92s also economically.

I have researched doing this but the net gain was like 30 hp, and I feel the cost difference wouldn’t be worth it.

The only issue they have are carbon build up, but that’ss well over 100k before the issue becomes somthing to look into, if I can cram an EcoBoost into the mirage I’ll figure out how to clean the valves lol!!
