2015 Mirage DE CVT - 38,000 miles - Copart Auction

There's a Copart yard not too far from where I work. I noticed the following Mirage auction yesterday when I checked their website...

With less than 24 hours to go in the auction, it was only at $250. It ended at $575 this morning. Lots of good parts left including the engine and CVT with relatively low miles.

Here's a link to the completed auction: COPART AUCTION 2015 MIRAGE

What's interesting is that the Sale Status says "On approval"...

I assume an insurance company owns the vehicle and has to accept or reject the $575 bid amount.

Yeah, that's usually what upon approval means at those salvage auctions. I've seen that a lot at the salvage sale sites around here.
Kinda sucks not knowing if you won right away.

Reserve on auctions is always crappy.

Well...the insurance company accepted the $575 bid on that Mirage. I'll have to Google that VIN number in a few months and see where it ends up.

I bumped into a guy in my office who has purchased a few cars from this Copart yard. He said he has rarely seen an auction close there without a sale. He just said insurance companies want to make sure that their cars are selling for a moderately reasonable amount. They don't want something to slip through the cracks...like a late model car with a bumper scuff selling for $250.

I understand, but if there's a required threshold, shouldn't the auction price start there?

Yeah, you'd think they'd just put a reserve on everything or start the bids at what they want for it. Or hell even skip the auction altogether and just put a fixed price on everything. There's gotta be a reason they do what they do it that way. Most sales I've been to we ended up getting all the salvage we won, only a hand full of times did the sale not follow through cause the price wasn't approved(high enough).
