Just from my observations of driving down some very long, or very steep but short, hills I don't think the CVT trans on our 2015 Mirage provides as much engine breaking when coasting downhill in drive (meaning just taking one's foot off of the gas) as I have seen with other small cars, including our recently owned 2006 Scion XA, which is similar in size to the Mirage but somewhat heavier.

I bet it's not sipping a great deal more gas than it would in neutral. I don't think I'd worry about it unless I were in a hypermiling contest and stood to win some real money.

If you leave it in gear it shouldnt sip any. Neutral uses fuel to idle, in gear uses nothing.
