RIP Standard VW Golf—Farewell From The USA

Lately it seems like every month another auto manufacturer axes another car. At this rate if Mitsubishi can keep selling the Mirage in the US for a couple more years (sales have been increasing every year so it’s likely) Mitsubishi could have the subcompact market to themselves.

Article in MotorTrend states the regular Golf won’t be imported but the hotter hatches would be:

That's too bad, but I'm not surprised. From my observations, I see almost more GTi Golf's on the road than I do a basic 2 door Golf. These days Golfs aren't exactly a cheap economy car anyhow.

I like your basic Golf with steelies and a stick and few frills. I think cars are just generally going more upscale, so the bottom is getting the axe.

I don't think the Golf is in the same market as the Mirage? Here the cheapest Golf costs € 25.505, while the cheapest Space Star is € 12.490. And a Golf is substantially bigger.

I don’t think they necessarily are either but here in the US at the current rate of models being discontinued the only cars left for sale here in the USA will be either upscale premium models or a dwindling few on the lower end of the price range. As far as inexpensive basic transportation the Mirage might end up being “last inexpensive car standing” at least here in the US.

They still sell the inexpensive Nissan Micra in Canada, but never in the USA. This is kind of telling in my opinion. If you live in the where ever midwestern suburb or rural part of any state, you gotta drive right. Not everyone wants to drive a micro car on I75 every day.

Can't blame people for wanting a bigger car, I have a few people who find riding in the Mirage a little scary.

I'm the exact opposite way. Driving anything big makes me nervous, and I really don't like the high seating positions that are getting more popular even on small vehicles. The lower I am, the more secure I feel. And I live in Arizona, where half the other vehicles on the road are lifted trucks and jeeps.

U.S. Sales Figures don't look all that bad, especially 2015-17. I would hate to see the basic Golf/Rabbit disappear, but VW has been making these things since 1974. They should indestructible by now, but they aren't. They are fun to drive, however!

I admire cars that are timeless. No matter what time period they are from, you instantly recognize them. The Golf is definitely one of those! Then again so is the Beetle! Maybe they'll bring back the "Thing"? I highly doubt that one!

All cars seem to be decreasing in sales as they get more expensive and people need to take 72 month or longer loans. Pretty sure used market is doing much better right now.

New auto sales in the US have been steadily increasing over the past ten years, and people are abandoning cars in favor of more expensive trucks and SUVs. The trend has been going on for decades, but it's really taken off during the past few years of cheap gas and a steadily growing economy.

Check out this graph showing the proportion of car (blue) vs. truck/SUV sales (red) in the U.S. since 1976. The trend halted for a bit when the economy tanked and gas spiked, then returned with a vengeance once the skies cleared.
