Your car must be different than mine. I've let my car get low enough a few times for the lights to start flashing. It took something like 7.8 gallons to fill the thing up. Scary business right there.

Ahh, so its just overly conservative to prevent folks from running out of gas.

I'm confused. Look like we have similar results lmao. These cars have 9gal tanks. So by your own experience you have close to 1.5gal when its blinking.

That’s been my experience. I’ve only let it happen once or twice. Both times whole fuel display is flashing and it took about 7.5 gallons. I fill usually right when I get just below half.

Some folks go skydiving or swim with sharks for thrills. Not us.

I am not sure it is stated anywhere officially, but each segment on the fuel bar seems to represent about one gallon of fuel. There are 8 segments (name used by our manual). If all 8 segments disappear, you would have approximately 1 gallon of fuel left (9.2 - 8 = 1.2 gallons).

If you fill up while the last segment is flashing, I would expect your car to take approximately 7-8 gallons to fill up. If your final bar starts flashing, I would assume about 7 gallons of fuel have been used.

If the final fuel segment disappears, the entire fuel bar & pump symbol start to flash. At that point, I would assume you are on your final gallon of gas. I had that happen once, & I filled up as soon as I reached the next town. I don't remember what it took, but it was probably closer to 8 gallons that time.

This is what the manual says about all this -

When the remaining fuel level runs low (one segment is displayed), the last segment of the fuel gauge flashes when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position or the operation mode is changed to ON.

When the remaining fuel level runs very low (no segments displayed), the bar graph flashes.

If the warning display appears, refuel as soon as possible.

It also shares this warning -

Running out of gas could damage the catalytic converter. If the warning display appears, refuel as soon as possible.

Like it has been said numerous times before in this thread, low fuel levels may put your fuel pump at more risk. I travel hilly roads, & I don't like to leave my tank get that low most of the time. Running out of gas is never good, & it is even worst with diesel engines.

While I don't recommend running a tank dry, it is far from a thrill to me. I have AAA insurance if needed.

I visit places like North Korea for thrills.

    Cool clip of your adventure!

How does one pick North Korea as a destination?
