I've heard that the automatic can get better mileage than the manual - can it possibly be true? all else being equal

Particularly on the freeway, I believe so, because the manual gearing holds the engine at higher RPM. In stop and go traffic, however, a good hyper miler can whip the auto all day long.

The EPA rates the automatic higher, but the manual has a solid lead in this forum's fuel economy logs (44mpg manual vs. 40mpg automatic):

Both transmissions are capable of incredible mileage, though, as azdonw is showing us.
