So this is all just a scientific wild guess, but a good deal of mirage's bought new are owned by people with very poor credit(Mitsubishi's in house credit company is one of the few in house companies that will loan to the lowest subprime customers). These people are frequently going to be very young, or dumb, or both. Makes for lots of the crashing.

I always figured it was because a Mirage is usually totaled in any collision above 30 mph where an airbag or two is deployed.

Always interesting when Jalopnik gives perspective to the numbers:

That's a good read. Thanks for posting.

Just don't read the comments after the Jalopnik article if you are easily offended...

So how do we know the Mirage owners did not buy the car, immediately regret his/her decision and decided to ram the car head on into a wall just to be rid of it?

I had to laugh at that one too! ^ I gotta agree with the comments about the mustang crowd crushers being dangerous.

I would still get another one. There are way too many variables and factors at play but with those stats, it is what it is. I'm not surprised that the Mirage is more common, since as many have said on this thread; that the Mirage is the cheapest car to buy and Mitsubishi will just give a loan to literally anyone.

If anything, I'm just waiting for a Mirage to pop up at my local junkyard so I can have a few spare parts!

It also lays out the most fatalities in the SUV/crossover class, and pickup truck class.

Would this have changed your decision to get a Mirage if you'd known? Not for me - I've always willingly driven cars on the "deathtrap" end of the scale, but I drive defensively regardless of what I'm in.
Oh great!?!? I actually own both a 2017 Mirage and a 2009 Corvette Convertible. I definitely did not want to be in the top two on this list at all.

    :-D

Could I please have whichever one is left after you perish in your inevitable wreck??

It's easy to also see why the mirage is up top... It's a number one choice for rental use and cheap rental use at that. So based on their survey data to approximate mileage there's going to be a lot of Mirages for sale coming off rental fleets with 30-40k on them in that time period. I'm surprised the Yaris isnt on the same list for the same reason.

    -Karl B. No Mirages currently...
