Mirage beats Corvette! (As the car with the highest U.S. fatality rate)

Maybe not the contest we want the Mirage to win:

This newly released study paints a not-unsurprising picture of the deadliest cars in the U.S. by distance driven. The worst offenders are sub/compacts and sports/sporty cars.

It also lays out the most fatalities in the SUV/crossover class, and pickup truck class.

    Full article/methodology here: https://www.iseecars.com/most-dangerous-cars-2019-study

Would this have changed your decision to get a Mirage if you'd known? Not for me - I've always willingly driven cars on the "deathtrap" end of the scale, but I drive defensively regardless of what I'm in.

Is the study influenced the fact that the Mirage has fewer numbers sold and on the road?

Hmmm...I have owned 4 cars on that list. I must have a deathwish or something...

So many possible ways of looking at this.

You could argue that sub-compacts are generally driven by younger, less experienced drivers.

The Corvette, Challenger and 370Z are probably driven more by younger, more aggressive drivers.

The Mitsubishi Mirage, Nissan Versa, and the Nissan Versa Note each earned the lowest possible “poor” rating in the IIHS small overlap front driver test, which tests what happens when the vehicle’s front corner collides with another car or an object such as a pole.
There's probably no data on this, but it would be interesting to know what percentage of collisions involve this type of "overlap" contact. I will say that I am most nervous (and defensive) in my Mirage when driving on a 2-lane country road where this type of accident seems to be more common.

I was kinda thinking the same thing. Could it be Corvette drivers are just crashing into Mirages or the other way around? Maybe there's some new stupid fad challenge like eating laundry soap?

The list includes examples from both ends of the sales spectrum. Soul and Versa sedan sell in relatively high numbers. Some of the sports cars sell in lower numbers than the Mirage.

    Non-answer!

This could be the reason why the insurance for the Mirage is higher.

I always figured it was because a Mirage is usually totaled in any collision above 30 mph where an airbag or two is deployed.

But if you die there's a limit to the payout, there's no long term 24/7 care.

I'm not sure if the limits have taken effect yet, but Michigan has historically had unlimited medical for car insurance.

I can’t say the seats are the strongest I’ve ever seen. Attachment 14584Attachment 14585 I've seen some pretty strong seats that would hold together when being crushed with a front end loader. I don't think these ones would do the same. One of the hardest cars I remember squishing was an old Volvo but that's not really a big surprise.
