    Battery Size and Replacement

The Mirage was shipped with a battery that is not easy to find in all parts of the world. Here is my attempt at documenting the various batteries for the Mirage. I'll start with the original, then my replacement from my dealer, then cover other options.

First the factory original battery: the 55D23L, by Hitachi.

    Hitachi
    AH CCA Length Height Width
    60 420 230 225 171

Other manufacturers make a 55D23L battery.

    GS Yuasa
    60 NA 260 x 173 x 225 (mm)

The following dimensions are taken from the document Technical Data for YUASA Automotive Batteries. It shows different dimensions from above.
    60 NA 229 L x 171 W x 203 H (222 total height)
    https://www.gs-yuasa.com/en/products...nIndonesia.pdf

    Panasonic N-55D23L-FS
    60 NA 232x173x204 (Length x Width x Height) mm

Mayshowa.com also lists the Panasonic 55D23L and includes more details. At least the dimensions match with the Panasonic.hk website.

    Amaron Go 55D23L
    60 320 232 L x 173 W x 225 H

55D23L Manufacturer AH Rating CCA Length (mm) Width (mm) Height (mm) Total Height (mm) Weight (Kg)
    Mitsubishi Mirage
    Owner's & Service manuals
    48 356
    YHI Hitachi 60 420 230 171 225 NA NA
    GS Yuasa 60 NA 260 173 225 NA NA
    YUASA Automotive Batteries Technical Data 60 490 229 171 203 222 NA
    Panasonic N-55D23L-FS 60 NA 232 173 204 NA NA
    Panasonic N-55D23L-FS by Mayshowa 60 533 232 173 204 227 15.9
    Amaron Go 55D23L 60 320 232 173 225 NA 17.4

That's seven examples from four different manufacturers for the 55D23L, with different dimensions and performance characteristics. Go figure.

Here is the replacement battery installed by my dealer. On a service visit to address a recall, I asked that they look at my battery as I had noticed it leaked some acid which caused corrosion to the battery hold down strap. I was hoping that they would simply replace the damaged component. Instead, my dealer replaced the hold down and battery. The replacement battery is Mitsubishi part number AMG8FB1X01, a Group 35 battery by Mitsubishi.

    https://www.mitsubishipartssource.co...MG8FB1X01.html

    A word about sizing.

There are different methods for securing a battery. I've seen batteries clamped at the bottom and with a strap across the top.

The clamp is used at the base of a battery to secure the battery in a battery tray. This method requires a protrusion or some other similar construction detail that would allow this clamp to work.

Refer to the diagram found here at MitsubishiPartsWarehouse.com for details: Electrical/Battery for 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage

The Mirage uses a simple hold down across the top of the battery which is secured to the battery tray with J-hook screws. This method requires that the battery have a top cover that will allow the hold down to fit without interfering with caps or vents.

Measuring the size of a battery can cause problems if these points are not taken into account. There are several reports here on the forum of replacement batteries that need modification in order to fit. We've had a report about modifying the battery box, or what Mitsubishi calls a 'Seat' (8201A191). We also had a report that longer J-hooks or Battery Mount Bolt (MA604676) were needed for their replacement battery.

With so many different sizes, mounting styles, and other criteria, I thought it would be helpful to list some different options that are readily available to help make battery replacement easier for us all. Sometimes the hardest part is picking a replacement. Putting it in can be pretty easy, and has been covered.

Make & Model AH CCA Length Width Height Weight Warranty Cost

    Notes:
•Notice that some of the most expensive batteries have lower AH or CCA ratings. That is probably because they are AGM and should hold up better over time.
•Due to shipping restrictions, online retailers won't sell wet cell batteries but will sell the expensive AGMs.
•I highlighted the Interstate 850242 for Costco as a very cost-effective replacement for OEM. Thanks to MirageSEFan for pointing this one out.
•I highlighted the Odyssey 35-PC1400T as strongest, heaviest battery of the lot. It's a real beast of a battery. For anyone worried about battery longevity, durability, and powering extra electronics, it looks like the Odyssey 35-PC1400T is the best choice.
•East Penn makes batteries for many brands and I haven't noticed anything that would set one brand apart from the rest. If there is a certain battery that is appealing, it might be available at a better price from one of the other brands.

This post will cover other batteries that have been reported as used in the Mirage on this forum.

We have some real pioneers who shared their experience trying new things.

Loren has a good modification. He wanted a lightweight battery for his particular use.

Oh, the important part. The reason for doing this. The weight!

    OE Battery = 34#
    OE Battery shelf/tray/tie-down = 2.8#

New Battery = 6.11# (+.1 lug terminal adapters)
    Modified battery shelf/tie-down = 2.16#

    Total battery weight reduction: 36.8 - 8.37 = 28.43 pounds!
fc321 wanted to fit the largest capacity battery possible, and was able to do so at a good price.

But I discovered at Walmart you could get a Group 24F battery for the same price ($49) and it has 585 cca (better than only 490 cca of the Group 35)

Be sure to visit the threads for details and discussion. Even though these experiments aren't for everyone, the ones who did it were nevertheless open in how and why they did it. And they did it their way.

    How would you do yours?

I'll add to this post over time. Let me know if there are any other such mods that could be included here.

I haven't looked into it, but I have wondered at the replacement time for my still-original battery in my Mirage.

That means over 5 years and 110,000 kms on my battery. Pretty good. I will go Hitachi battery again when the time comes.

I may end up going with whatever CAA can provide, if I'm in a parking lot somewhere and I need a battery replacement service call.

I would be surprised if you were able to find a Hitachi battery for your Mirage in North America. Even Mitsubishi Motors North America uses another brand for replacement.

Be sure to let us know what you come up with.

According to my owner's manual, the factory battery has only 356 CCA.

    Copied/Pasted from manual - 55D23L (356CCA/99RC)

Different CCA ratings for the same brand/group size batteries are common.
AutoZone has three Duralast group 35 batteries with 3 different CCA ratings.
Walmart has numerous group 35 options (different CCA ratings).
It all depends on how much you want to pay.

Many batteries are made in the same plant with a different label slapped on them. Quotes below -

"Some of the batteries themselves are manufactured by Johnson Controls, which also manufacture Duralast, Varta, AC Delco, as well as 20 other brands.

Most EverStart batteries are made by Exide with a few made by Delphi. Johnson Control does not make batteries for Wal-Mart nor do they any longer make Interstate (now made by Exide.) Common JCI battery brands are Optima and Duralast.Sep 5, 2018"

Thus, batteries like Everstart and Interstate are both made by Exide.

Having a pair of longer J hooks on hand may be good for a battery replacement. I haven't measured the current factory ones, but someone mentions these work great with their group 35 battery in the reviews. Longer is better than to short, because a small hacksaw can fix the long ones.
