Edmunds: Top 7 budget commuters for 2019

    Edmunds asks:

What to do when you need a car that can rack up miles but not your debt ratio?

...cars that deliver good fuel economy and have features to ensure your sanity on long drives. The first four are tops among Edmunds editors for extra-small sedans . Other choices in the class round out the list in alphabetical order.
    1) FORD FIESTA
    2) KIA RIO
    3) HYUNDAI ACCENT
    4) TOYOTA YARIS
    5) CHEVROLET SPARK
    6) MITSUBISHI MIRAGE
    7) NISSAN VERSA

And they didn't even mention that that they're all tin can deathtraps!

Though they couldn't resist adding the hysterical comment that the Mirage has problems keeping up with normal traffic.

No non-hybrid budget car can match the Mirage’s 43 mpg on the highway and 39 mpg combined. ... But you’ll be moving slowly as the Mirage’s three-cylinder engine struggles to keep pace with traffic.
Hey, maybe that makes it safer? It's a feature, not a bug!

I dont understand why these articles keep saying the Mirage cant keep up on the highway? I drive 75+ on one of the most dangerous highways in America, I75, and its just fine. Just turning the radio on at middle volume stiffles out most of the road noise. Unbelievable.

Road noise isn't just something to drown out. I'm sure it also isn't great for one's hearing if too loud.

As for keeping up on the freeway, I know I've had brief stints passing at 80+MPH, and the engine doesn't feel maxed out at that speed.

(I also drive on I-75, just nowhere near you )

The road noise isnt that bad to begin with though. I doubt it would damage your hearing. Road noise was just as bad in the Versa, Mazda2, and Yaris I test drove IMO.

Road noise varies significantly by speed and tire/pavement surface. The road noise in the Mirage is okay, for the most part, but some roads are REALLY noisy.

When I switched from the Enasaves to the Federal SS657's road noise was reduced dramatically.

I think it's a simple case of the Mirage suffering by comparison. Car reviewers are used to driving powerful cars -- in many cases, cars more powerful than most normal people ever drive.

I'm used to ~50 hp, 3 seasons of the year (my beater Chevy Metro). So to me, a Mirage feels pretty speedy ... by comparison.

Absolutely right. A new Honda Accord will do 0-60 in around six seconds. That is about the same as a 1990 Corvette. Most new cars are just ridiculously...and unnecessarily...fast.

What's worse is the majority of people who buy powerful cars never use more than about 30% of the power they pay for. Ever try merging into 70 mph freeway traffic behind someone in a Lexus RC350 who seems terrified of going more than 45?

Haha! Right! Especially when merging onto the highway. There's been so many times where they keep a constant speed ON the ramp and then when they're ON the highway (with cars 1/4 mile away behind or in front of them), then they accelerate. (sighs).

But really, I agree that most new cars are pretty powerful for what they are, especially when they will never use the full power of the car.

The Mirage sort of goes against the trend you see in America, and that's the Mirage's appeal to me.

It's not just cars that I see this happening with. For example - ATV engines have continued to get larger & more powerful. It's reached a point where power steering was added to deal with all that extra weight. Thus making the ATV even heavier. It becomes a vicious cycle, & I don't get sucked into it.

Practical doesn't seem to drive sales these days, but it should!
