Sunroof Anyone? (UPDATE: sliding glass sunroof installed!)

Has anyone added a sunroof (simple manual pop up) to their Mirage?

I did a brief search first, & a few threads were started on the topic. Didn't really find anything that indicated someone actually added a sunroof to their car, but I may have missed it, too. If something on this topic already exists, please feel free to direct me there.

Since the Mirage doesn't have a dome light in the middle of the roof, it may simplify adding one. I am just curious if someone has followed through and added one?

I haven't heard or seen anyone do it. Seems like it might not be too hard, but there are some body lines on the roof that might complicate things.

I've never seen what is under the headliner on these cars. If there is a bunch of bracing going across the underside of the roof it might complicate things.

Might be a good place to start looking.

It's wide open above the headliner, except for a brace running between the B-pillars... which I guess would have been the perfect spot for a sunroof.

My Mexican friend told me the word for "sunroof" in Mexico is "quemacocos." Quema = burns, cocos = coconut, slang for "head".

Without that brace up there the roof would have the rigidity of a beer can. Has anyone actually waxed their roof and leaned on it too hard? The sheet metal thickness on these cars isn't what it used to be.

Amen. That roof is part of the vehicle's structural integrity. Hacking it up to install a sunroof would require welding reinforcements somewhere else on the roof.

I once had a 1965 Ford Mustang hard top which I wanted to remove the roof to make a convertible. After doing some research, I quickly learned that doing such a conversion would require modifications to the frame as the hard top roof is part of the vehicle's structural design. I came to my senses, and decided if I were to ever own a 65 Mustang convertible, I would simply buy a 65 Mustang convertible.
