So in 2 days of ownership, 294 miles, the 2019 GT is averaging 38 MPG after 100 mile drive. The 2015 DE would easily report 46.1 on same route, same road a month ago. Maybe in break-in period? Maybe the larger, fatter tires and more horsepower? Not sure, but in 9 gallons of fuel its significant enough to notice

The car is brand new you will need a few thousand miles on it to really see it's TRUE numbers. But yeah those slightly larger wheels and tires could cause a slight drop. My 17's get 48-51mpg regularly.

Might be the larger tires, and also more bells and whistles on the GT compared to the DE, means more weight.
I believe the old saying goes that as car model years go on, car's weight oftentimes goes up, so that extra HP Mitsubishi threw in the 2019 cars might just be accounting for more girth in the Mirage. Could be I don't know, 38 mpg in a not broken in engine is pretty good.... so see what happens!
You gotta get the feel of the car too for the optimal fuel consumption, perfect feel for the throttle and brakes, like any car. I had a rental Santa Fe recently, and after driving around some, the fuel economy went from 8.5 to 8.2 L/100 km's (to almost 30mpg, a few mpg improved) after around 900 km's (500 miles) of my driving.

You can't judge anything by 2 days and 300 miles on a new car...so don't lose any sleep over it. I think you need to monitor at least a few tanks of fuel to get a reasonable idea of what this car is consistently capable of.
Oh yeah...I forgot to remind you to get a 4-wheel alignment check. You want your tires to last as long as they can. They almost make Enasaves look reasonable...

You are giving some mileage away going from the manual to the CVT. That is certain. Plus, the GT is a bit heavier and has larger wheels and tires. Larger wheels and tires mean more unsprung weight. But these cars need a good 1500 miles for the motor to really be broken in.
Once the engine is broken in and you learn exactly where the gas pedal likes to be with the CVT, it should be reasonable to expect 40-42.
