It may be a challenge to cut one open without creating a lot of metal shavings in the process. I've seen a number of youtube.com clips that show guys cutting open oil filters (both new & used one). Angle grinders seem to be the fastest. I don't own one of those. I would probably use my Dremel tool. It would be quicker than a hacksaw.

Hope someone has a better suggestion for you!

I had a thread on here somewhere where I cut my 1st filter open. I used my exhaust pipe cut tool to open it up . I found no anti drain back valve or steel end plates on the filter medium in the can... Post pics of what you find... https://mirageforum.com/forum/showth...actory-filter)

Yep. Punch a pilot hole for the snips, then scissor it open.

No coil spring, poorly made bypass valve, no drainback rubber. This is Mitsubishi OEM filter. Cardboard too. Filled with 400 miles of break-in shavings

I like how RockAuto.com lists their oil filters for the Mirage (economy, standard, & high performance/heavy duty). Their prices seem to reflect the quality of the filter you are getting somewhat. It's surely not a comprehensive list, but it gives you a sense of how some oil filters somewhat compare.

    Not impressive! Thanks for sharing.

I wouldn't knock it for the break-in-shavings, however. A good filter doing its job shouldn't look clean after 5,000-7500 miles in my opinion.

Different view, metal flakes aluminum in color with a lot of copper colored silt in base of metal housing. (Used shears, did NOT grind anything open)
