I can't really see a difference in the cooler. Maybe the holes are different size? I can't find a picture of the early 14' cooler anywhere. If that is the only difference it'd too easy to just install a 15+ and not worry about hording all the early cvt's you can find.

It seems to me that this difference in interchange is likely related to the infamous 'starter grind' issue in early cars. I suspect any differences would be found under the bell housing. I seem to recall the starters being different on early '14 cars as well?
Not to say that any of this necessarily precludes using a late trans in an early car.
