I am not saying something has to be a stone age relic. I looked hard at what people like you were saying about their 2014-15 Mirages before I decided to buy an updated 2017 Mirage.

Knowing the Mirage (especially the manual) had a somewhat dependable powertrain was important to me. I will even add Fummins' experience with these cars helped convince me that these economy cars were ok, even though he doesn't own one personally.

I think the Prius C is a well built car. It's known to be super reliable (maybe the most reliable). The Prius C is reliable & economical, but it's highway mpg rating is exactly the same as the Mirage. I bought a Mirage, because I could buy a brand new one for under $10,000. Paying a lot more for Prius C wouldn't make me enjoy it more. The Mirage with its simpler technology does everything I want a small economy car to do. It also has a charm of its own.

If I paid a lot of money for a new Honda CRV that has 1.5L GDI engine issues, I would not be a happy camper. If the solution is changing your oil more frequently because of the gas in your engine oil, I am not impressed by that. If I bought a new Honda CRV today, I would buy the base model. Not because I am cheap, but because it has their proven 2.4L engine in it.

The desire to crank large amounts of horsepower out of smaller engines comes at a cost. I am not saying everything out there is junk, but there is a lot of unproven stuff being thrown at consumers. I am not impressed by that. Buying a new vehicle shouldn't feel like going to a casino with your money.

If that were true, the Hyundai Accent hatchback would be coming back. I don't think Hyundai is doing anything special here. They are trying to built a competitive small sedan for the U.S. market. Personally, I think the rise of KIA/Hyundai has impacted Ford & GM cars sales the most. KIA/Hyundai are producing better cars with better warranties for less money.

Mirage production capacity for global export from the Thai factory is 165k cars a year. Philippines also assembles the Mirage & G4, but for domestic consumption only (you could estimate local production based on these 2013-2017 PH sales figures). It's unlikely Mitsu is at full production with the Mirage at the end of its product cycle.

What do you mean 'at the end' - it's just getting started.

I figured Hyundai has a small small sub-compact car on the market somewhere. Probably more than one car company's subcompact car on the road in Iceland eh? The i10 sure resembles the Toyota Yaris.

Iceland is a country I actually hear a fair amount of chatter about visiting. But I've already decided Ireland (Dublin) will be my next vacation.

Not exactly sure how renting a car is in Europe? I prolly won't bother.

My daughter & son-in-law will be visiting Iceland in August. Since they live in Finland, the trip will be a little shorter for them. I can ask them how many Yaris clones exist in Iceland? I would probably have to explain what a Yaris is, & they may lose interest fast!

I somewhat forced my daughter to learn how to drive a manual. She wasn't to keen on it at the time, but I already knew back then that she would be my world traveler. Since graduating from UW-Madison, she's lived on the other side of the Altlantic (Chad, Africa & now Helsinki). Everything she has driven in both Africa and Finland has been manuals.

Things may have changed some in recent years, but another friend of mine traveled a lot for her job. She used to claim automatic vehicles were 4x more costly to rent in some European countries.

I drive manuals because no one ever wants to borrow my car. Not really! I like manuals!

My daughter & her husband became childhood friends on opposite sides of the Atlantic many years ago because of a common interest in "Lord of the Rings". As a young girl she taught herself the Elvish language of Middle Earth. They are attending the 2019 Tolkien Convention in Iceland this coming August. A very fitting vacation for the two of them!

I am a bit off topic here!

There is a reason Hyundai i10's and Mitsubishi Space Star 1.0's and manual trannys generally sell in Europe, and not in North America:

Europe gas is way more money. When I go to Ireland and England maybe, I wonder what it will be like... driving on the "wrong" side of the road. Shifting gears the wrong side. Paying like $15 dollars a gallon equiv. for gas.

Another thing is city cars are great in their own way, but if you live in say Warren Michigan I can see why a regular-sized sedan is more preferable transportation than a Mirage, or a Hyundai Accent even. You have to drive bigger distances I feel, and the winters (well Finland must be cold in the winter)

It's moose & reindeer country in Finland. They visited the Santa Claus Main Post Office on their honeymoon. That sounds like cold country to me!

Public transportation is valued more there. My son-in-law has an older Fiat Punto. It doesn't look all that different from my Mirage. His one car is shared with my daughter, his parents, and his sister. Three parties share one small car. Even then, parking is a challenge to find sometimes. I live alone, have two vehicles (Mirage & Forester), my backyard is a 72 acre forest. We live different lives for sure!

The Mirage can't do everything I need a vehicle to do either. The Mirage is an awesome 2nd vehicle for me. Part of my reason for owning it is so they can borrow it when visiting the States. It's also extending the life (less miles racking up) of my Forester. Replacing AWD vehicles has gotten more expensive.

Given the power & size advantage, the Mirage should have a much lower MSRP than the Hyundai. I don't think Hyundai & KIA are bad cars. I am bit skeptical of new engine designs, however.

I am not against change. I want things to work when I spend money on them! In that respect, the Mirage is a gem!!!!

Nice. Also drove an i10 on Iceland in 2016. Of course that was a manual. It was fine, but didn't have AC.

The Mirage is nice and simple. I live in rural Ontario Canada and a used Subaru is my thinking for a second car, maybe in a year or two, once my Mirage is paid off.

Thanks to Space Wolf for showing the photo above of the Hyundai i10 driving in Iceland. Everything always looks different in real life, compared to the promotional car photos online.
