    Question Thinking of buying....

I'm going Saturday to check out and maybe buy a 2019 Mirage 4g ES 5 speed.

I was wanting to know, does the 1.2L 3 cylinder engine this car has use a timing belt or chain?

If belt, spring tensioner or oil actuated?

If belt, how many miles is replacement recommend?

interference engine? (Valve hit piston if it breaks)

I'd do 20,000 miles a year easy just for work. plus that for fun. I'm getting it for the low cost, warranty, and fuel millage.

It's a chain. Open the oil filler cap and have a peek for yourself!

(I'm sure someone here said it's visible... never looked myself.)

Well...then you're like about 90% of the people on this forum. That's why we bought one.

Be sure to add "extremely reliable" in that list of attributes.

You looking at new or used?

    Timing chain.

It is a interference engine but with a double row timing chain you should never have to worry about it. We have one forum member that is approaching 300k miles with zero engine problems and he’s still on the original clutch. The engines in these cars are rock solid. With the 5 speed you’ll easily exceed the EPA estimate. Many members with the 5 speed average well over 50mpg in day to day driving. If you want basic, reliable, inexpensive transportation it’s tough to beat the Mirage. If you’re looking for a ton of bells and whistles and electronic nonsense then the Mirage isn’t for you. The Mirage is shipped worldwide to a lot of developing countries and you can actually maintain it yourself. I like to think of the Mirage as the type of subcompact all Japanese manufacturers used to make but somehow forgot that not everyone wants or needs to spend $25-40k+ for a car.

Low cost, high fuel economy, and reliability are the three things this car was designed to do well. And it doesn't do much else.

With a 5-speed especially, the Mirage is pretty much bulletproof in terms of reliability. We have never heard of anyone even having an oil leak, and there have only been a couple of 'check engine' lights mentioned here. Yes, it comes with a great warranty. You won't need it.

I bought mine new with 14 miles on it. It now has just under 125,000, and the only unexpected problem it as ever had is a broken clutch cable at around 113,000.

    .
Yea I have a 5 speed manual Mirage ES myself. Owned since new in April 2014.

No problems with the car except a faulty starter, like some other early Mirages built apparently...and my Mitsubishi dealership finally accepted the issue was real. They grudgingly fixed the problem. The dealership/stealership lied when they said they sunk over $3000 into my Mirage.

Anyway it is otherwise been a good car. Drives straight as an arrow. Identical feel from day one to now, with 115,000 km's on the odometer. The 5 speed manual shifts smoother now 5 years on. There is a slight vibration in 4th, just on the shifter, not the car..not sure why, from day 1.

Car stalls easy. Guaranteed to get 5.3 L / 100 km's, that's Canadian. Simple transportation with good handling. Vague blah steering, Lancer isn't much different I found, from my rental when my Mirage was getting the starter work done. Mirage is a quality vehicle but maintain it, oil it etc. Have a fun test drive

Pretty good deal for a brand new car that will get 40+ mpg and never break.

That's a good deal right now...assuming that one of the fees isn't a $899 "documentation" charge. One of the cheapest Mitsubishi dealers in the country isn't even advertising 5-speed Mirages that cheap right now. Here's an example...

Be aware that 5-speed Mirages are not easy to find in many markets.
