1.0L Mirage/Space Star: best non-hybrid fuel economy in Japan (JC08)

From a May, 2012 Mitsubishi presentation slide at a Mirage demonstration:

    Top class fuel efficiency
Fuel Efficiency Ranking (Japan - JC08 mode)

    1. Toyota Aqua 1.5 (hybrid) (this is the "Prius C" in some markets)
    2. Toyota Prius 1.8 (hybrid)
    3. Mitsubishi Mirage 1.0 (with idle-stop)
      27.2 km/L / 3.7 L/100 km / 64 MPG (US)
    4. Honda Insight 1.3 (hybrid)
    5. Toyota Priusa 1.8 (hybrid)

      23.2 km/L / 4.3 L/100 km / 54.6 MPG (US)
    10. Nissan March 1.2 (non-hybrid, with idle-stop)
    11. Honda CR-Z 1.5 (hybrid)
    12. Toyota Vitz 1.3 (non-hybrid, with idle-stop)
    13. Suzuki Swift 1.2 (non-hybrid, with idle-stop)
    14. Honda Freed HV 1.5 (hybrid)
    15. Suzuki Solio 1.2 (non-hybrid, with idle-stop)
    16. Toyota iQ 1.0 (non-hybrid, without idle-stop)
    17. Toyota Passo 1.0 (non-hybrid, without idle-stop)
    18. Honda Fit 1.3 (non-hybrid, without idle-stop)
    19. Suzuki Splash 1.2 (non-hybrid, without idle-stop)

That's seriously impressive to be sitting there mid-pack among the hybrids.

Makes me want to try the 1.0 Mirage myself. Even though I know that's unlikely, since we're only going to get the 1.2L in Canada.

The top ranking Japanese Mirage gets some additional technology not offered on other trim levels or necessarily in other markets:

    According to Mitsubishi:

The new Mirage launched in August 2012 surpasses Japan’s fuel efficiency standard for 2015 by 20%. (source)
Exceeding the 2015 target exempts the car from some taxes in Japan, which in combination with its relatively low price has helped spur sales there.

I bet a lot of the 1.0L Metro guys would like to see the 1.0L Mirage engine brought over. It still has more power and better fuel economy. Alas, they don't seem to be putting the 1.0L out in many countries at all. As far as I know Japan is the only one? I'd probably guess Europe would be another.
Custom Mirage products: Cruise control kit, Glove box light, MAF sensor housing, Rear sway bar, Upper grill block

Current project: DIY Nitrous oxide setup for ~$100

That would be cool. It would be fun to compare against the 1.2.

I have an 1.0 with AS&G, and I think the numbers in the first post are overstated. 27.2 km/L for AS&G and 23.2 km/L without? My car can do 27.2 km/L. At a constant speed of 80 km/h. In that case the AS&G will never kick in. You will get the most profit of AS&G in town, with a lot of trafficlights. But in that case you'll never get 27.2 km/L.

We have to baby the pedal and be going downhill with the wind the right way to even think about 27.2 km/L with a 1.2. Plus I do a lot of city driving so AS&G might help my city numbers. Seems odd they don't sell that option in the US with the EPA being as MPG hungry as it is.

Also the tires are very significant. Bridgestone ecopia with 165/65/14 is the best combination.

    Good information!

Sadly, the POTENZA RE92 is the only 165/65-14 Bridgestone offering in the United States.
