I'm always amused to hear people on this side of the pond complain about the price of gas.

We got it so easy, we just don't see it.

Wow! At least European prices are for 95 octane.
In the future our energy prices will also include a CO2 surcharge, and sales tax on top of it all. They are talking about €60.- to €120.- per single ton of CO2...

Yes, but our prices are in euros, and not in Canadian dollars.

One litre of petrol equals about 2400 grams of CO2. So at €120/1000kg about 29 cents per litre will be added. Plus VAT, I suppose.

That translates to $2.36/L Canadian for your regular octane, from yesterday's Euro/Canadian dollar currency price. Ouch. Vancouver's $1.60+/L doesn't seem so bad.

If you calculate €1,62 per Litre, plus 36 Euro-cent for CO2 surcharge plus additional sales tax, it would be €1.98 per Litre. Times 3.8 = one US gallon, = €7.52 per US gallon, in US $ that would be roughly
    $6.70 US per gallon.

You know now why there are so many small economical cars available in Europe?

Gas around $3 a gallon right now in the US means half the price you pay.

I would not want to fill up a 4 x 4 GMC 2500 truck in Germany, one fill up and people would switch their cars.

My favorite take away from all of this is the fact that tax is being charged on tax! It's bad enough that the price of the underlying commodity is so high when the world is awash in oil, it really is, but it's just blatant theft for them to have multiple layers of tax based on the prior level's value after it has tax applied!

We should should take our pitchforks and lanterns and revolt but we're too distracted watching the latest Dancing with the Stars...
