    Clutch adjustment plastic nut failure

The plastic nut gave up on me yesterday morning. Good thing I was just about to accelerate from full stop when it happened. Clutch cable was intact, which was a relief.

I always had a pack of cable ties with me for this kinds of scenario, so i was able to hold the nut back in place with a series of cable ties. I wasn't expecting the nut to fail and loose its thread so soon.

Now I'm looking at getting a pair of steel nuts in place of the plastic one, the other steel nut to keep the adjustment in place. I just have to figure out what thread size and pitch i need for it.

Edit: My mirage is 3 years old, and has 32k miles on it.

That's an interesting failure. Is your clutch difficult to operate?

Compared to the more recent models, i found mine to be stiffer. A good thing though as it gives me better feel of the engagement point.

I thought I could get away with replacing the nut with a steel one. The threaded end's diameter is 12mm with around 1mm thread pitch. Unfortunately, the end hook is more than 13mm so there's no way to fit the steel nut through. I can use clamps, but those will just make clutch adjustment difficult.

I guess a full replacement is necessary even if it's just a nut failure.

Because I wonder if that has contributed to this failure. I recall others reporting their clutch took more effort to operate before theirs failed.

I don't think it that's the case. Pedal resistance has not changed since I bought the car, even so after having the new clutch cable installed.

I'll make time to modify the old cable, see if I can trim the excess 1.1mm off the hook head to fit an M12 nut through the cable. For now, I have to make sure the car is reliable

nut developed loose thread? could it be manufacturing defect ... inferior quality of plastic?

trimming the hook head.. would that not compromise the strength integrity of the hook head? I'd probably would not do that.

As of today, I've decided to replace it with a brand new oem cable. I'm keeping the old cable for 'recreational' purposes.

Could be a defect, could be not. This car is 3 years old and I have this habit of changing the clutch engagement depending on if I'll be driving it on city traffic or bring the car on mountain roads.

Well that's an interesting bit of information.
