    Question Help: Oil change

Hi everyone, I have a 18 Mirage G4, is it ok to change the oil filter without draining the oil first? I made s stupid mistake that I put on an conventional oil filter which will last for 4500-5000 miles and full synthetic oil during my last oil change. So, I have to change the oil filter at around 4500 miles. Is it ok to remove the old filter directly? Or do I must drain the oil completely first before putting on a new oil filter? Thank you!

I say run that filter as is.

Back in the day there wasn't any synthetic this or synthetic that.

    You'll be fine.

Edit: can anyone tell if the factory filters were synthetic? I think not...

What they said. Just run that filter. I guarantee most if not all oil change places just use the cheapest filter they can get their hands on that threads on.

Thank you Eggman. I just feel more comfortable to replace the filter, could you please tell me do I need to drain the oil first?

No, you don't need to drain the oil. You'll have to add a small amount of oil back in after you put the new filter in.

    Sorry I wouldn't know.

It's my understanding that synthetic media simply catches more of smaller particles - that is all. That is why I wouldn't want to discard what is otherwise a new, unused filter. The synthetic lubricant alone is the most important component.

You can change the filter without changing the oil. Do it with the engine cold so that most of the oil is in the pan and you won't lose as much. You'll still have to add a little bit of oil to make up for what comes out with the filter.

Thank you very much! That is what I am thinking too, the filter is not at the bottom position.
