Heat shield rivets rusted off & I fixed it

I very recently developed a very loud rattling in the front of the Mirage. Yesterday it was a ridiculously warm day so I checked it out. This is what I found:

That is the CATs lower heat shield, and its definitely not supposed to be oriented like that!

Here I got the lower one realigned, but there were no fasteners left to hold it in place.

I couldn't find an easy way to reattach it, so I ended up pulling out both the top and bottom half heat shields. This does require unplugging the O2 sensor and finagling things around a lot to get them both out. There isn't a ton of extra room to move them around.

    Here is the top shield.

    Here is the lower shield.

The top shield has what appears to be the remnant of a rivet perhaps? The bottom just had holes.

In any case, I simply drilled out what was barely there in the top shield. It took almost no effort at all to pop through that rust.

I ended up reattaching them with some small stainless 10mm head bolts that I had on hand. Its one again secure.

I can only imagine this will be an issue for others. Mine is a 2014 and an early one at that, and they use salt like crazy here in Wisconsin. So, its a worst case scenario. But, I am still pretty surprised that whatever was holding it together is COMPLETELY rusted away. Thankfully, the fix is really quite easy.

Custom Mirage products: Cruise control kit, Glove box light, MAF sensor housing, Rear sway bar, Upper grill block

Current project: DIY Nitrous oxide setup for ~$100

Maybe spot-welded originally, and the welds disintegrated? Nice fix, but for me it would have been pop rivet time!

Same thing happened to my 2014 Mirage last winter. Suddenly this loud rattle. All fixed now, but no surprise in Ontario, where the winters can get brutal. What I do is, I get my Mirage oiled every year. Still, this doesn't stop everything.
