    2019 U.S. Small Car Sales

Well, 2019 is done, all the reporting is in. Here's how the U.S. market shook out in terms of small vehicle sales.

    Just a couple cliff notes:
    • General Motors sold a LOT of small cars.
    • The Chevy Spark outsold the Mirage by over 4,000 units as sales were up 32.5%
    • The entire Fiat lineup is at the bottom. Will the brand leave North America?
    • Ford's Fiesta had its best year since 2015, and 2019 was its last.

    I'm not sure I can consider a Trax/Encore a small car...

It's 2" shorter than a Mirage G4 and based on the Chevrolet Sonic. It's small.

I am not surprised. I live right by a Chevy dealership and I recently saw a bunch of Sparks lined up in front. They appear to be selling well. Even though I know a Mirage is nicer. I think the Spark would be interesting with three cylinders.

Sorry, the numbers from the article didn't copy & paste that well.

Even thought they somewhat split their own market, I am somewhat surprised the Mirage outsold the Accent & Rio individually.

Hindsight is easy, but Mitsubishi should have never wedged the Eclipse Cross between two models they already carry. A smaller AWD vehicle like the KIA Soul would have been a much bigger hit. If it had an AWD manual option, I would have bought a one years ago.

The Eclipse Cross ended with less than 20,000 vehicles sold (19,661 in 2019).

Considering the lack of a good dealership network, I think the Mirage does quite well in the States.

I echo your sentiments with regards to the Eclipse Cross. It's too similar to the Outlander Sport. I was told by their PR team that it was "more upscale," which it arguably is. It's still on the same platform as the Outlander Sport, too, albeit, different engine. I was told by a PR person that while it seems like it might not make sense right now, it may in a couple of years. I've read about Mitsubishi offering something smaller than the Eclipse Cross. We'll see.

I'm with Tim on this one.

Or maybe this Chevrolet Trax is some other model year...

The Mirage is an A-segment vehicle; one of the smallest cars on the market. The Trax/Encore is still not exactly a lumbering beast, especially compared to many other cars on the road. Again, it's on the Sonic platform, which is also a small car.

Surely there is a smaller segment that the Toyota/Scion iQ, the Smart, and maybe the Fiat 500 belong to?
