Thread: Best Oil for a Mirage?

  1. #11
Our highest mileage car that saw 99% highway everyday had oil changed at the longer of the two intervals(12000km/7500miles) for the first 300 and something thousand km. Once it got around 400 and was used only in the city I changed it more often at 6000km/3700miles like the rest of the ones in the fleet. Basically if you live in Canada and use the car like a car you need to follow the severe schedule according to the manual.
If it ever warms up here I'm gonna pour some thicker oil in my personal 2014 Mirage when I change it(or next time it's low) to see if it'll shut up the rattling engine. I've got some 5w40 and a bunch of gear oil to try. I've basically got no engine warranty as I have no proof of previous service history so I'll keep it going til it starts using more oil than gas or get louder than the radio.

    Isn't water thicker than that?
    Simplify and add lightness.

What standard does that comply with? I don't see any certification markings.

    Never mind it's racing oil.

This. Regular oil changes are much more important than the exact brand of oil you use.

Keep the oil clean and you will be fine. I have used Mobil 1 0w-20 since mine was new, and the car now has nearly 140,000 miles on. A compression test at 95,000ish miles revealed an engine with near-factory compression. The oil was changed every 7,500 miles, and an OEM filter was used. I recently switched to Kirkland (Costco) brand synthetic simply due to cost. The car hasn't blown up yet!

Engines are going to wear when they are used, and there is no oil that can prevent this. Truth be told, ALL oils are pretty good nowadays.

Fummins was right when he said this may turn into a 50 page thread!
Some of the posts have almost religiously sounded opinions. Some confuse viscosity with quality...

Here is a good read for comparing oil qualities:

Here's my choice of oil. Apart from Mobil 1 I have never heard of the oils mentioned here. Mobil 1 sells for about £50 for 5 litres and my choice, Petronas Syntium 7000 for about £24, on the bay of fleas in the UK some are selling 5 litres of Petronas for £123???
WTF, have they lost their medication?
