Help! Locked out of car while engine was warming up?

This morning I was getting ready for my uber driving shift and something happened that never happened before. I started the engine to warm up, exited my car, came back after 5 mins and I was locked out while the car was running! Luckily I was at home and had a spare set of keys, but the spare fob wouldnt unlock the car, I had to manually turn the knob to get in. I thought it was impossible for this to happen if the key was in the ignition? I did notice when I cranked it the overhead dome light dimmed lower. I hope this isnt an alternator issue?

Sorry for your bad luck there Dirk. Not sure, take it easy with your Mirage the next few days, you're probably worrying too much. Or overthinking the whole event and thinking of scenarios. Nothing to worry about.

Alternator issue is when your lights go dim and stuff. My whole right side of my console doesn't even light up at night anymore half the time. If you tap it my orange console lights comes back on. I wouldn't worry, pretty sure even cranking the HVAC in my Mirage will dim the interior lights. Like for a second.

I bought the ES eh, so only have 2 keys, no fob at all... I have locked my keys in my car, 3 times and had to get roadside.. even though there are no less than 5 doors to lock manually on my Mirage. My Mirage was off in my case.

I have seen the Mirage start up in -40 weather on youtube. So I warm up my Mirage for about 5 to 10 minutes as I scrape all the ice and snow off my car, blast the defrost... my Mirage starts at 3 F with no plugging it in.

My neighbour spends so much time warming his truck I think he is a baby lol and what is wrong with the truck if it takes an hour to warm it.

I just don't understand, it's supposed to be impossible locking the car when the key is in the ignition? The locks will not lock if you hit lock button it'll just kick right back to unlock usually.

My Ford Escort was fully-loaded with keyfob, but the metal key was separate from the fob part.

Is this an issue happening to you literally right now?

I tested it again with the window rolled down and it didn't do it again. I have the non push button DE version where the fob is connected to the key. Maybe a new fob battery is in order?

I like having backups for important things like car or house keys, or even two of a tool that I use a lot around the house.

Keyfobs have their advantages and their disadvantages. To me, it's a pain to have to manually check my doors are locked all the time, even though around here I leave the trunk unlocked so I don't have to call CAA a 4th time, for locking my keys in my car.

Well I'm just hoping this was a one time glitch because I can't seem to replicate the issue. Thank God I was home and had an extra key to manually unlock the car. Now I dont trust the system Im pulling my keys out every time from now on and I'll sit in the car while its warming up.

That's interesting. I too thought this was protected against. Is there any possibility that door lock switch was hit while opening or closing the door?

This is normal operation. The alternator doesn't factor in until the engine is up and running. The alternator is an energy conversion device, converting mechanical motion to electrical energy. Without the alternator spinning, it cannot make electrical energy. The battery is what's supplying the energy to operate both the interior dome lamp and the starter. The more any battery is loaded, the more it has to work. Actually, it's a good sign you were able to start your engine while the battery was running other loads.

It better let me lock the doors while the car is running. Too many seedy areas near me where I click the lock button by instinct. My brother had a guy try to jump in his car at a traffic light once!

Do you have a spare key to unlock doors but not start the car?

This might be a useful feature. You can leave your car running & lock the doors. A spare key kept in your pocket can be used to unlock the door using the door lock. The spare key wouldn't need the remote lock/unlock buttons or a transponder programmed to start your Mirage. Just a simple key to get you in.
