My water pump is dead, any advice?

Hi, I have a 2015 Mirage and I've been having overheating issues when idling as well as a slow coolant leak. I took it to the shop today and they said the water pump is bad, and quoted me ~$700 to replace it (including labor).

My question is a few parts:
    1. Is $550 a realistic price for an OEM pump? They claim there's no aftermarket options, but looking online it seems there might be.
    2. Where is the pump located? I can't seem to find any good engine diagrams online, and the local dealership doesn't have a service manual I can look at.
    3. Is replacing the pump something I could do on my own, assuming I have access to tools and a few jacks? I'm not particularly familiar with engine repair, but I'm good with other mechanical repairs and I've been wanting to learn car repair for a while now.
    4. What model number should I look up for the pump? AutoZone has several pumps that look very different from each other but all say they're compatible, and none of them look like anything I see in my engine bay.

    Thanks in advance!

    Ebay $37.83 Aisen Brand

It is behind the pulley the back of belt rides on.

    You could change it yourself.

The OEM water pump does not appear to be $500+...

Interesting that the service manual mentions an O-ring while the parts diagram shows a water pump "seal" above...that looks like a gasket to me.

Awesome, I think you've answered all of my questions. Thanks a ton for the help! I'll order the parts tomorrow and update when they arrive if I have any questions. You all rock!

It wasn't super clear to me in your first post. Was your original quote coming from a dealer, or was a local mechanic telling you an OEM part had to be used?

Just curious? Sounds like others guided you in an excellent way!

I didn't go to the dealer; in my experience they're crazy overpriced. That quote was from a local mechanic who seemed to have excellent reviews on Google. They're also the one who said there aren't any aftermarket parts available.

I would make a point to let them know they were wrong about the OEM part. In today's world, lying about stuff like that is just plan stupid. I don't mind calling people on their own stupidity. It's for their own good!

I would let them know they lost your business over this, & you won't be recommending them to all your car buddies. Where I live, small town mechanics can't get away with stuff like this. Reputation is everything!

From what I can tell, the shop isn't the type to intentionally lie and they seem like they make an effort to not intentionally rip people off. I find it more likely that they just aren't aware there's aftermarket options. Either way, I'm definitely going to talk with them after I fix it.
