Angry The USELESS, For PROFIT, 'Tire Pressure Monitoring System'

    Excellent Post.

    Thank you!

The 'TPMS' light is flashing, so I went to the dealer to find out exactly which sensor was triggering the light.

Unbelievably, they told me that they could NOT tell me which sensor was triggering the light.

They said that the car's computer does not tell them that information, and the only option was to replace all 4 sensors at $200 each.

    REALLY ???

I left the dealership angry !

I am so sick of corporations screwing us by 'building in' profit for themselves, with this type of crap.

Today, I am covering 'TPMS' the light permanently.

The 'Tire Pressure Monitoring System' is an utterly useless, for profit system, and makes people lazy.

We should be looking at our tires before we get into the car everyday, as we always did in the past.

And we should be aware of the 'feeling' of the tires as we are traveling.

That's not shocking. Welcome to dealing with a Mitsubishi dealer. Some are great and
Just drive up to a tire shop or any shop that has a tool that can read tpms sensors.

They should be able to tell you which senors are either not working or improperly inflated in just a few minutes without even opening a door. Some may do it on the spot and others may make you book an appointment. Luck of the draw.

I don't look at my tires each time I go somewhere. I've only destroyed one tire so far. I could have saved it but changing a tire on the freeway in the winter wasn't gonna be a good time so I limped it into a parking lot to change it.

    Thank you Fummins,

Great info to know for the future.

But for now, the light is covered, it only took about 15 minutes to do it.

I just took the car for a ride to make sure everything else still works.

It is soooo nice not to have the TPMS light flashing "give me money", "give me money", "give me money"; in my face constantly.

I personally wouldn't let that slide. If I had a broken sensor on my Mirage, I could tell you which one it is in under 5 minutes. It would take me longer to find my scanning tool than do the job. Seriously, I can scan all 4 tires in less than 5 minutes.

If you have a Discount Tire nearby, they would tell you which one is broken for free most likely. Once you know which one has failed, politely ask them to clone a new one to the original one. If they can't read the sensor with a scanning tool because it is broken, they can get the code that is stamped on the old sensor to clone it to the new one.

If they clone a new sensor to the original sensor, install it, balance your tire, & mount it back on the car, you're done. They don't have to do a single thing to your Mirage.

This would cost me approximately $28 for a sensor, & I can clone it myself. My local tire guys in town (don't have a Discount Tire nearby) would install sensor & re-balance for about $10 cash. This is $40 repair in my case.

Since you don't have a scanning tool & you are buying the sensor from them, I would expect this to be about $100 at Discount Tire. That's asking them to clone a new sensor & install it. I am only speculating, however. It could be more or less. You could surely call & get a quote first.

Once you get this fixed (let's say it cost $100), I would go back to the dealership (show the cost of repairs) & make a scene. I would not let this slide, but that's me. Everyone in their building would know I was pissed before I left or was escorted out, because this is quite lame.

This is why I only go to dealerships for warranty or recall work. I wouldn't handle what was done to you very well.

I don't mind TPMS, but will admit that the implementation of TPMS in the Mirage is definitely lacking. I think they made it a low-level system (the driver can't see the 4 tire pressure values) to save a few bucks per car.

If you could actually monitor your tire pressure readings on the instrument panel you would see some benefit.

My biggest complaint with the Mirage system is that the TPMS relearn process in the Mirage is unnecessarily complicated and requires a fairly expensive TPMS/scan tool. You can do the same relearn process in a GM car with a $10 trigger tool.

Back to your issue... Like others have said, any competent tire shop can find your problem in about 2 minutes with a decent TPMS tool.
