Taller geared Euro manual transmissions available for £300

(Transmission part number label from a UK spec Mirage)

For anyone imagining putting together a best-mpg manual gearbox, an EcoModder member recently let me know that used Euro spec Mirage gearboxes are available from UK wrecking yards for 300 GBP.

Refresher: These have a taller final drive, at 3.550 vs 4.055 for North American Mirages. That means lower cruising RPM and better fuel economy.

(This was a not-uncommon mod for 1.0L Geo/Chev Metro owners, installing the taller f.d. gearbox from the 1.3L 4-cyl car. I did it to my '98 Firefly.)

It gets better because we don't need the whole gearbox ... just the final drive gearset. The North American box has taller 4th and 5th gears than the Euro box, so the best case combination is an international mix 'n' match mongrel. Bonus: save on shipping costs too.

Hey itschad... good opportunity for a side business?!

How much would this thing weigh? I am definitely interested in getting one of the Euro gearsets in the not-so-distant future.

At some point in the future I’m thinking about replacing my 5 speed manual In my OS/ASX/RVR with the 6 speed manual in the UK Eclipse Cross so I’m interested to see how it works out.

Let's see them. You'll have to tell us more about them.

That'll reduce RPM, but it's not guaranteed to improve MPG, because it also changes:

    - rolling resistance
    - tire width (increases aero drag)
    - slightly higher ride height (more aero drag)
    - different rotational mass (likely higher)

Not saying it won't work, but it's not a guaranteed bulletproof solution like a gearing change.

Also, don't forget to correct your odometer reading when calculating MPG to compensate for the different distance travelled!

The car's MPG gauge will actually record less distance per gallon, from any gearing change (whether from tires or gearbox changes).

Don't know what the Mitsu gearbox weighs, but the one I swapped in my Firefly/Metro weighed about 65 lbs.

What would just the final drive gearset weigh? A couple of pounds?

Can this not be corrected in ETACs?

I remember this discussion and searched for the data someone else has already shared on this forum. This was their findings -

I tried resetting the tire diameter in ETACS only to find the measurement has presets.
You can only choose between the following:
    1748mm
    1784mm
    2015mm
    2026mm
    2066mm
    2073mm
    2082mm
    2124mm
    2155mm
    2185mm

I am just sharing what others have seen here. I am not claiming to have done this, because I use factory size tires. I don't even remember which size above is the factory setting. Some members claimed their Etacs were set on 1748 mm. If so, you may find a better match for a somewhat larger tire.

ETACS has a number of pre-defined tire circumference values in it. As long as your non-stock tire has one of those circumference values, then you could (in theory) correct it in ETACS. See this post.

LOL...Mark must have remembered the same discussion.
