That's the joy of owning a manual!

I don't see a slightly taller 5th gear changing much of anything, except lower rpm.

This car throws me off sometimes. If I am not paying attention, I will try to shift from 5th into a higher gear because the car doesn't feel like it's in it's final gear. A taller 5th gear would save my sanity, along with alot of other people. Really surprised Mitsubishi hasn't taken action on this yet for the US market. Is it because there's not enough of us to warrant getting them offering the EU manual gearset in the US Mirages?

Which would come with a minor increase in highway mpg, and a moderate reduction in noise on the highway in 5th. Both worth it.

They probably keep the 5 speed manual for ease-of-use. I love shifting gears too, but I can see how more shifting would be annoying.

Imagine how much more your Mirage would lug in the wrong gear. I say they should make an optional 6 speed manual, to satisfy the true fuel sippers out there!

Wouldn't that be something - Mitsubishi offers only one engine here.

thing is - for a given speed, if you are in one gear doing x rpms or another higher gear doing x-y rpms - the fuel use would be the same - the same amount of work is being done

    More gears equals more better?

I may be misunderstanding your statement, but why have most manufacturers moved to 6 speed automatics or infinite ratio CVT's to increase fuel economy If higher gear ratios don't matter? Also if I'm going 65 mph in 5th but turning fewer RPM'S than going 65mph in 4th, then less fuel should be used as engine is turning slower. I'm no engineer, but I'm pretty sure my engine uses less fuel at idle than at 4000 rpm
