But, think about it....they got five years out of a car that costs half of what some cars cost (which may last, what, 10 years?). Not sure how many miles on it, but the mention of Pike's Peak makes me think they did in the trans (sorry Dirk)! No, but seriously, the bent up radiator support, etc., probably cost a lot to fix for the average non-do-it-yourselfer. That's probably why it's there.

It is a $12000 car – some rusted paint and a few dents could count as "totaled" to some insurance companies.

Can't wait for Dodge Aires K to see this one. He'll resurrect it and profit handsomely.

What's the book value of a fair-condition 5 year old Mirage DE with 100,000+ miles? Maybe $2500 on a good day. If that thing has at least $1800 worth of damage (75% of book value), it's totaled.

I see a damaged front bumper cover, hood and 1 front fender. That easily puts it over the $1800 mark. If this thing runs/drives, I wonder why it didn't end up at a Copart auction or something.

It might already be in a pick n pull and the lady journalist didnt know it. Might of just assumed it was a junkyard only?

    We are good at speculating!!!!

I am going to add that it could be a flood damage car.

Hahahahahaha! I would if it was close, cheap, and not already in a yard. Once it's in, game over.

Although I did just get a 1987 Dodge Lancer for $260 hahaha. Master cylinder went out but it runs and drives decently. Sure as hell doesn't stop though! It's got a few other issues but that's junkyard pricing so it can sit and wait for when the market opens up again.

Look carefully and you will see the core support is also bent. That car may be a dumpster fire underneath the front end.

My ex-gf just had her 2014 5-speed DE with 130k written off in an accident. She got $3400 for it, and was not even expecting that much. She knew that car owed her nothing...and she owed nothing on it.

Doesn't take much to scrap one of these. But that is just because it is a cheap car. My Mirage is in great shape. It is a five-year-old car with 143k that could pass for a one-year-old car with 14k. But it is getting to the point in terms of age and mileage that anything other than very light cosmetic damage will send it to the wrecking yard.

Bottom line is this: people love to pick on our little Mirages. I didn't even bother reading the comments section. I know how this song and dance goes.

I've owned (and still own) a host of "unpopular" cars. I like them because they're different that the usual. I've developed a thick skin with regards to criticism. When you are a "car guy" and you hang out with other car guys and you tell them you own four Mitsubishis, one of which is a '17 Mirage (as well as an '07 Yaris) you can see their eyes glaze over like you're some sort of lunatic; like you probably eat paste in your parent's basement; like you might have been dropped on your head as a baby with a follow up punch to the cranium as an adult. You simply get used to people "not getting it." At least I do. But that's all part of it. I enjoy what I enjoy, no matter what others say.
