Thread: Personal best MPG / fuel economy

  1. #21
Back on topic, I managed to get 4.8l/100km(49mpg) shown on the dash on my way to work the other day driving like an old lady. Almost no traffic on the roads. This morning left 30 mins later and the roads were just like they were 2 months ago. I only managed 5.9l/100km(39.8mpg)keeping up with traffic. I'd swap my crap summer tires on but they're calling for snow for the next 3 days.

You should make a garage entry so we know what car/transmission you have. It'll be accessible under your username.

    Garage empty: add car

If you're on mobile, you might have to switch to the desktop version of the site to add a car - not sure.

You will know when you turn on the AC in a Mirage: Awful MPG and performance with AC on

Just to review...the top 3 things you can do in a Mirage to kill your fuel economy:

    1. Drive above 65 mph
    2. Drive with the AC on
    3. Do both at the same time
That thread is for a 1 liter engine, which we don't have in USA.

If premium fuel doesn't affect summer performance, that means it got little to no heat soak.

I know with sporty cars you have to examine fuel economy figures different, apples to apples. So I'm sure the normal Fiesta gets 40 mpg
The St is a turbo version of the normal one. The normal fiesta may get about 32-33MPG. They all suffer from a high final drive gear ratio, meaning 3.2k rpm at 80mph.
The St could have been given 2.75k RPM at 80 and gotten 35 mpg easily. But apparently it's not really made for the street..🤔
If you want better numbers on the St, you got to keep the speed below 55-60, where it gets 50mpg instant.
Nothing like the first gen Chevy cruzes (eco), that got nearly 70mpg instant at 35-45mph in 6th, but I got rid of it because the heat soak was horrendous! The car refused to accelerate beyond 65-70mph when it got over 105F (probably close to 120F on the tarmac)

Well, it's been fun guys. I going to sell my Mirage and buy a 70 mpg Cruze. I'm pretty sure my work will be replacing the fleet after hearing that news too.

Before I pull the trigger, can you tell me which cars can get 100 mpg? I'm sure there's got to be a smaller more fuel efficient car than a Cruze out there. Thanks in advance!

Good luck on your endeavors! Make sure you have a very steady foot, and maintain exactly 35mph at all times, no stopping!
The best I've ever gotten was with a modified Honda rebel 250. It got between 110 and 120mpg (at 200 miles of 35mph near windstille, with a +1t front, -9t rear sprocket).
If you want mpg, be prepared to waste hours of your life on the road at sub 40mph speeds.

Yesterday I saw my highest MPG numbers yet in 9 years' of Mirage ownership: 4.1L/100 km's. Maybe one day I will get it below 4.0.

That's easy, just reset the guess-o-meter while coasting downhill.

Driving yesterday in warm spring temps, maybe 23 C, driving about 20 minutes, 25 kms total distance. Driving secondary country roads, and doing about 85-90 km's an hour, in 5th and 4th gear.

Really not putting any effort into anything. I just happened to check my fuel gauge while waiting at the traffic light once I got in town. Surprise!

Warm weather, just taking the backroads without speeding, usually at 60-90kmh in a 1.oL with a driver well used to driving economically without being slow. Picture was taken while slowing down in front of a red light.

PS: 3.3L/100km is about 70 mpg / US

Just for info, The A/C was off, picture taken after about one hour and a half of driving.
