    Rear drums with ABS

So, 2014 Mirage ES. 5 speed, with ABS and traction control.

Needed new rear brakes, rear drum was scored horribly.

Does anyone sell drums with the ABS tone ring? Or was I supposed to have moved that over from the old drums -- didn't look like it was really possible and they're gone now.

But I know the Traction Control works as it jacked up the driving. Also know the switch to turn it off works. So I've got that going for me.

The encoder ring is part of the bearing, the bearing is pressed in to the drum, and is available at Rock Auto.

I had a shop take the bearings out of the original set and press them into the new drums. Tone ring definately looked like it was cast into the drum. Suppose it could have been press fit -- would make a lot more sense.

Can't find anything buy plain old bearings at Rock Auto.

So your replacement drums don't look exactly like your original drums?

The shop manual does not show an ABS ring as a separate part. It's just the drum, the bearing and the snap ring that is installed after the bearing is pressed in...

Here's a picture of Cobrajet's used OEM brake drum. I honestly can't tell if his looks exactly like mine or not?!?

Get yourself a FSM Factory Service Manual and consult it! See part number 5.
If ABS and traction control works, the encoder should be OK!

The ABS ring in my picture is coated in 'brake grindings', which is why it looks different than the ones in pictures of new ones. The metallic grindings arranged themselves in that pattern on the magnetic ring.

Normally, I would suggest sourcing used parts here due to cost and availability. But how much is the new Centric drum?

Sounds like maybe there was a change in design?

I recall someone installed their bearing backwards and caused similar problems. Now I can't find the post.

Oh and welcome back. Good to see old-timers check in.

OK...that explains it. I kept looking at your drum last night thinking that it had some sort of toothed ring on it...but mine doesn't and neither does the one on RockAuto.

It appears that ring is part of the drum assembly in the US. My Mirage shop manual doesn't show it as a separate piece and neither do any Mitsubishi parts diagrams that I can find (see image below from Mitsubishi Parts Warehouse). Foama has a European-spec Mirage so maybe that's why he shows the magnetic ring as a separate piece.

arz...If those drums look like the photos here, I think I would just bolt them on and see if they work.

This image shows the location of the wheel speed sensor for US and European Mirage drum brakes. It looks like they are the same...

Edit - The list price of 1 OEM Mirage brake drum is now $332.

That is what I thought when I took the drum off...until I touched it and 'toothed ring' disintegrated!

That much? Really? I still have my original drums! Don't know how effective they are anymore..

I will have a closer look at my drums once I get my new alloys and rims on my Mirage june 8th...the monday... that was a deal, $100 cash for gently used OEM alloys, and almost new dunlops.
