Are Mitsubishi parts more expensive than Nissan? I didn't know that.

So I just called a Nissan dealership to check on the extended warranty, and yes, the cvt is under extended warranty until 12/29/20 which is about 6 more months. Not a long time but also not too bad for a used car...

Service at the Mitsubishi dealers is expensive. My local Ford dealer is 1/2 the price for an oil change.

That tiny amount of warranty isn't worth the nerve wracking thoughts of when your cvt is going to grenade. The Mirage is simply more reliable, so things like needing a major part replacement should be few and far between. Besides your out of warranty so just get your oil changes at a shop and your cvt serviced at an Aamco or another transmission specialist every 30k miles or so.

Ok... so there's another twist to this... there was an 2013 Ford Fiesta SE with 48,000 mileage and only 1 owner with excelleent maintenance record. The price was a little high so I made an offer for $6400 (out the door) and thought they wouldn't accept but they did. Now I have another option to consider.... I test drove the Fiesta and it was ok but I was not in love. However, the mileage is lower, only 1 owner and consistent maintenance.... Did I say I'm very indecisive?

Here's the downside of that scenario...

Let's assume you buy the Nissan and it's a decent car. But a year from now it starts acting up when you drive it. You pull out onto a major roadway and step on the gas to get up to speed. But the engine RPMs just bounce around and you can barely get the car going 30 mph...and you almost get rear-ended in the process. You also start noticing the car has trouble maintaining speed going up a hill. Eventually these scenarios start happening more often. By now, your warranty is gone and the car is almost un-driveable.

Like thousands of other Nissan owners, you find out that you need a new CVT. Your options are limited. You can roll the dice on a used salvage yard Nissan CVT (but it's probably junk, too), you might get lucky and find a shop to rebuild it for a few grand (and maybe get a 1 year 12,000 mile warranty on the rebuild)...or you can pay Nissan $5,000 to put in a new/remanufactured CVT. None of those are good options.

This exact scenario happened to a guy I work with. The only thing that saved his butt was that he bought one of those over-priced third-party extended warranties with the car...and it actually paid to put a new $5K transmission in his Sentra. Right after that they cancelled his policy for some reason. Now he's looking to sell the car because he figures in another 40-50K miles it will start doing the same thing.

Lol you just keep going from bad to worst. The Fiesta has a dry duel clutch transmission system which is even less reliable than a cvt! Ford too, was involved in a massive transmission lawsuit and it's a big reason why they're not even making compact/subcompact sedans anymore, only the Mustang. Look for the money, go with the Mirage or get an older used Yaris, Mazda2, or the Fit. All reliable choices, the Mirage is the cheapest out of those 4 choices because of cheaper fit and finish/smaller engine.

Now if your willing to go manual all the choices are available to you with alot less risk in terms of reliability but let's face it, driving a stick is a pain in the ass in a big metropolitan area. I've called countless tranny shops and they all tell me the same thing, they do Nissans everyday and hardly see any Mitsubishis. And this is in Atlanta, where Mitsubishi are every where because they're cheaper and we have 3 big dealerships.

Stay away from new Kia cvts too, problems are already being reported. I'd wait a couple of years to think about a Rio lol.

That could be a good buy, and the same subcompact car ballpark.

I think good maintenance is as important, or maybe more important, as the badge on the hood. Personally, I like the styling of the Mirage more than Fiesta inside and out. They are more European Ford than American Ford.
