Nissan Rogue using Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 1.5L turbo? Article link

Car and Driver: 2021 Nissan Rogue to Add Turbo 1.5L Three-Cylinder for Better MPG.

Is this the same engine as in the Eclipse Cross? Will the CVT be programmed with Xtronic or INVECS III? I hope the latter because on the surface, it appears Mitsu does a better job in CVT longevity?

That would be a good reason to buy the new 2022 Outlander with the 2.5L engine instead. Honda took one of their best 2.4 engines of all time & went to a 1.5L turbo in their CRV. There's no way I would buy the current offering. My dad has a 1.5L turbo in his GMC Terrain. It's the latest trend, but I don't see the benefit?

    2020 Outlander Sport 2.0L (148 hp) 24 city/30 highway
    2020 Eclipse Cross 1.5L turbo (152 hp) 26 city/29 highway
    2020 Outlander 2.5L (166 hp) 25 city/30 highway

Does a small turbo really help the Eclipse Cross mpg ratings?

It doesn't stand out to me as being better. Imagine putting that same 1.5L turbo engine in a slightly larger, heavier vehicle like the Nissan Rogue.

I am not a fan of the small engine turbo craze. If buying new these days, my money would go to Mazda or Toyota (non-turbo engines with automatic transmissions). That way I don't have to worry about what CVT it has or how it is programmed.

I am not a brand loyalty guy. I have never owned a Mazda or Toyota, but I prefer their offerings (powertrains) these days.

All valid points, but is this a 1.5L turbo Mitsu engine in a Nissan? Just curious, as the article didn't mention. Perhaps we will find out in the future.

The 2022 Eclipse Cross has a 1.5 L turbo 4, same as the 2019 I sat in a few years ago at the dealers.

I think these are different engine families. But the 4 cylinder turbo may very well be Nissan derived. The only 3 cylinders I know of in new cars, is new Minis, sitting around 130 HP.

Heavy SUVs like the Equinox, with very small turbo 4 cylinders, seems like a lot of work and stress on the little engine, maybe leading to premature wear and tear, I don't know...

No one said the Rogue was getting a Mitsubishi powertrain. Dirk was just speculating about it.

My comments were based on 1.5L turbo engines in general. They are becoming quite common for some companies. The same could be said for 1.0L turbo & 2.0L turbo engines.

The best small SUV powertrain I ever drove was my parent's former RAV4. At one time, they were putting a V6/3.5L engine with a 5-speed automatic in some trim levels. That vehicle had excellent power & decent fuel economy to go with it. It's the only vehicle my dad ever bought that wasn't a GM. It's the only vehicle I regretted him selling, beside our 1972 Chevy pickup when I was a kid.

That takes me back. Dad taught me to drive in his 1971 Chevy Custom 10, 307 V8 with 3 on the tree. Good times..

No, the engine in the Eclipse Cross is the 1.5L 4 cylinder 4B40

The new 2020 Buick Encore GX will thus come with a choice of two turbo engines, both of them 3-cylinder. The first is a 1.2L unit (LIH), the second 1.3L (L3T). The smaller bloc will generate up to 137 hp and 166 lb-ft of torque, while the larger engine will deliver 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque.

My neighbour just got one of these. I'll get a chance to check it out soon enough.

Really eh, I'd be interested in hearing their real-world MPG numbers in the Canadian climate.

If lots of countries are banning sales of new gas cars by 2030, then maybe the last "gasp" will be 3 banger turbos. You would think that Encore GX has a big V6 just by the looks of it.
