Yeap it's because of the government policy on tax-free cars ended this year. Only pure electric cars with CO2 emission lower than 50g/hr which are on the road before 1 january will enjoy tax-free until 2019. So my tax-free mirage will have to pay tax from 1 january. Fortunate for me the car's so light I pay one of the lowest rank of road tax. Diesel cars weighing under 1150 KG will have to pay around 1100 euro tax per year, gasoline cars under 1150 KG pays 520 euro per year. Mirage pays 260 euro per year on road tax.
That to say diesel is priced at 1.35 euro per litre and gasoline is at 1.66 euro per litre.
So Mirage's still the best option here to drive the cheapest.
Comparing the car of the same weight 1150 kg diesel and gasoline, to reach the break even on tax, the diesel car will have to run 39.273 KM it's almost 40K more just to reach break even! not to mention after 20K cars will have to get their service and oil change, so it's 2x 145 euro more you have to count on the price to reach break even, which means the car will have to drive way much more just to reach break even point! So I really don't get why people buy diesel cars here in the NL.
No way they are driving 100K a year on their Mercedes, BMW or Audi diesel. For bus, trucks and mini busses I can understand.
