    Delayed Engine Start

    2014 Mirage ES CVT - 52K miles

    Hello guys.

In the last weeks when starting cold the engine functions on what feels like a low power state for a few seconds and then switches to normal operation. At first it happened sporadically, but the frequency of each occurrence has been increasing to now being almost every time it starts cold. Subsequent starts immediately after one of these dragging starts produces a normal behavior. But if the engine is let rest for a few hours, the same issue occurs.

This is a video of a delayed start. The drag is between second 0:11 and 0:16.

This video is taken immediately after the one above. The engine behaves fine then.

To me it almost sounds like the starter gear is staying engaged with the ring gear. You may want to remove the starter & check the teeth on the ring gear & starter as well as the solenoid & starter drive for sticking &/or lack of lube...
I didn't know what to do, so I didn't do anything

There is a TSB on the 2014's for the starter. This thread also has the PDF.

That's what I thought. This wouldn't be the first 2014 with a starter problem.

Took the starter apart to clean it and grease it. The ring gear is dry as a rock. Is that normal?

Yep ring gear should be dry as a bone.

Now rotate it a whole revolution & inspect all the teeth...
