Thread: Jalopnik - The Case for the Mitsubishi Mirage

  1. #21
Okay, I finally read that article. The writer nailed it. The comments made my eyes bleed. I guess all the retards of the internet jumped in there talking about how small cars aren't necessary in North murica cause gas is cheap, you can buy way better cars for more money(well no ****), they're unreliable, terrifying to drive, ugly.

I'd comment too but it'd cut into my avatar swapping time.

Huh. I'd just assumed you'd automated that somehow.

" Mirage sales have increased every year since 2013, according to GoodCarBadCar.com, rising to 26,966 last year. That’s likely also in part because the Mirage has less and less competition in its segment. Subcompact cars are getting discontinued left and right. But it’s also because the Mirage is probably the best kind of car there is: a cheap car that functions, and isn’t pretending otherwise."
My favourite quote in the whole article is the following:

"It’s a vehicle that wouldn’t have looked out of place in the Clinton administration except it also has traction control."

For me, my Mirage ES hatch 2014 has been a good car for 6.5 years. Except last year when I spent 75 hours at the Mitsubishi dealer getting my car fixed. I think the 2015 onward Mirages are what Fummins keeps saying: simple car, non-cramped under the hood. Simple car for 2nd world countries, more than Canada or the UK. So on our roads the Mirage looks a bit ridiculous. But like the reviewer said in the Japonik article, the Mirage's interior is really nice.

Interior is plain, but simple and functional. When I first got my Mirage, my friend said there is no chrome in the car or any on the exterior.. all black. This makes the interior feel even more modern than the RVR rentals I have had in the past, or the Lancer Sportback interior I had, looked way more dated.

My Mirage replaced my 1998 Ford Escort wagon, so yes Mirage is much more than a 1990s backward mobile.

As much as I liked 90s styling with tiny grills and a top half of glass... not having to worry about structural rust, better crumple zones, and more airbag protection are huge advantages for the Mirage.

But hey, the flappy door handles are a nice 90s throwback.

I'd be lying if I said I felt safe in a Mirage. But I don't worry about dying, just gotta drive a little more defensively. Act like everyone else on the road is a retard. Works great so far.

Being a truck driver for 7 years before working in a body shop has taught me this concept well. Everyone else is dumb except you. Expect everyone to screw up at any time.

I wonder how some people got their license. Some guys/gals can back up a 53' trailer around a corner with no issue, and I've watched others take 30 mins and end up like this

I am one of those who has no issue with backing. Short trailers are way harder to back imo...

Anyway I don't find the Mirage unsafe.

It's a funny quote, but it's factually incorrect... the Mirage has a lot more safety features than just "Traction control."

The Mirage has a lot more going on safety wise than most 90's economy cars could ever dream of, case and point, how many 90's economy cars had the following standard equpiment:

7 Airbags (Side curtain and knee for driver)
ABS (some economy cars had this option back in the 90s, but not many)
    Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD)
Traction & Active Stability Control (TCL & ACL)
    Brake Override System (BOS)
    Brake Assist System (BAS)
"RISE" (high strength steel crash beams)

The 2021 Mirage is supposed to have even more safety features than listed above, according to the press release that was posted back on here a few months back.

People really have no idea just how much safer modern cars are now (even cheap ones) compared to a normal mid size car back in the 90s.

I grew up riding around in the back of a 1998 Dodge Neon, want to talk about crash test results between that and the current Mirage?

Moderate Overlap Test, 1st gen Neon vs. 6th Gen Mirage.

That being said, these tests don't really mean that much anyway when you get by a much higher, heavier truck, either way it's going to be bad.

    Update on this article:

"The Chevy Sonic is dead. So is the Toyota Yaris. So is the Ford Fiesta. The Chevy Spark, Kia Rio, Hyundai Accent, Nissan Versa, and Mini Hardtop are all still sold here, and the Honda Fit is too, but maybe not for long. For my money, though, I’m increasingly in on the Mitsubishi Mirage"

They've now confirmed that the Honda Fit is being discontinued in the US... no word about Canada yet.

"The Honda Fit is getting discontinued in the U.S., alongside the Civic coupe and the manual Accord. Which has me, a Honda Fit owner, feeling a little emotional, so forgive me when I say get bent, Honda."

    https://jalopnik.com/dead-honda-fit-1844418117

I didn't even own a Fit, and this makes me a little sad.

Small, affordable cars you can buy, 2021 USA & Canada:

Chevrolet Spark, Kia Rio, Hyundai Accent (US - Sedan only), Versa and the Mirage.
