According to the manual, it says B mode "is for use when light engine braking at high-speed is needed, or driving up very steep hills and for engine braking at low speeds when descending steep gradients."
The JATCO CVT7 is a two speed CVT gearbox with a high and low range. Everytime you start from a stop the transmission starts in "B or L (they are the same thing)" even when the gear selector is in "D or Ds". It upshifts from the low range into the higher range ratios at a low speed usually around 15 mph so you might not notice it. When you come to a stop and sometimes you get that "lurch or that weird delay from a stop" that's the CVT shifting into the low range. Shifting it manually from "B or L" into "D or Ds" or vice versa is just you the driver deciding when to change gear ranges, not the computer. JATCO even put out a handy little video to demo how the system works.

This article talks about using the CVT ranges more aggressively.

How did "fun to drive" and "CVT" end up in the same topic?
    Simplify and add lightness.

Show me a thread that people didn't go off topic

(Actually, there are some but they're rare creatures)

Hey, this forum has a reputation to uphold and going off topic seems to be one of our strengths!

    Very interesting. Thank you!

    From the article...
"There are some important caveats to discuss, things never done on a CVT, but shifting on the fly from D to B, and vice versa, is not only possible, the auxiliary gearbox on the CVT7 even seems tuned to some spirited D/B toggling."
There's something in me that still believes constant shifting D and B harms the transmission in some way. It's fine in theory, but CVT is a delicate and fussy thing...
