Slowest-Selling New Vehicles in the United States

The following study lists the 10 slowest-selling vehicles in the United States, and number 1 & 2 are both Mitsubishi vehicles. Despite SUVs being the hot ticket in vehicles sales, Mitsubishi has two models that remain on dealer lots longer than most everything else on the market. That's not a good sign for Mitsubishi.

I've never been a fan of the new Eclipse Cross (second slowest-selling vehicle in the States).

Not a good sign for Mitsubishi Motors. The Outlander deserves more attention than it gets. 3rd row option, nice interior from the ones I've sat in at the dealer. And the electric hybrid option is unique.

Not sure why Mitsubishi hasn't cashed in on USA's mega SUV/CUV craze. Sorta sad that hasn't happened. Maybe one day. Maybe Mitsubishi needs to sell trucks to draw in audiences.

The problem with trucks is the chicken tax...which is way virtually all pickups for any brand are made in the US. I wouldn't be surprised if there's demand for cheap, low-frills trucks, though.

I like the Outlander, but it is dated. I like the Eclipse Cross, but they need to do a better job of getting it in front of people. Plus, a lot of people don't like its looks.

I still think the bigger problem here is the lack of consumer awareness about the Mitsubishi brand as a whole. People truly don't even know this brand still sells cars in the U.S. That has to change.

Weird, it's almost like this is a stupid BS protectionist policy from a country that prides itself on free enterprise and free flow of goods across borders.

I never understood how the 'chicken tax' is permitted by the WTO or how it's not a bigger issue by other countries.

It makes sense why it's a popular policy domestically, but it's pure automotive protectionism aimed at ensuring GM / Ford / Stellantis (FCA) can charge whatever they can get away with for trucks as it makes competing in the market prohibitively expensive for competition.

Toyota makes their trucks in the US, Mexico or Canada to get around this, as does Nissan, but it's hardly worth any one elses' trouble compared to the market share of the other big three.

I think Mitsubishi's biggest problem is it's continuously shrinking dealership network. It is hard to sell people on an Eclipse Cross when a person has to drive past ten Honda and Toyota dealerships selling RAV4s and CR-Vs in order to find one. Hell, if those guys are having a hard time generating showroom traffic why should it surprise people that Mitsubishi is having a harder time?

There is also a pretty serious dearth of advertising coming from Mitsubishi.

The Eclipse Cross actually gets pretty good reviews from what I have seen. Not glowing reviews, mind you, but pretty good. I might buy if I could get a 'fire sale' deal on a loaded one.

I still contend that Mitsubishi made a real mistake when they named their new CUV after a sports car they discontinued only a few years ago. I think it confuses people.

I live near a Mitsu dealer but I totally agree with the advertising. I think people do know that Mitsubishi is still here but compared to how 'good' Kia and Hyundai has jumped up, I can see why. Plus, all the other odd rumors about how horrible Mitsubishi is being built (still) compared to how it was built 25-30 years ago. When I bought my 2011 Outlander Sport, my Father In-Law told me about how bad the Mitsubishi's were built... even though I've helped him fix/maintain his 09' Chevy Silverado literally every other 6 months (brakes, bad fuel pump, faulty oil pressure wire, charcoal canister, etc) lol

Living near a Mitsubishi dealer, I see the Outlander/Outlander Sport and the Eclipse Cross much more often though. I think it's nearly every day that I'll spot at least one of those 3. I forget the rewards the Mitsu dealer near me got, but they are number 1 in sales with the Outlander/Outlander Sport.

I'm assuming it's just that people don't know much about Mitsubishi because I don't see them getting advertised as much as their other competitors. I see a BUNCH of Subaru, Ford, Hyundai, Kia and Honda ads. Of course, during the winter, those Subaru ads are on every commercial here too. I do like the Eclipse Cross, sure it's a bit odd and uses the name quite oddly but it's not a bad car. Cars aren't as bad as they were just from 20 years ago but I guess time demolishes all things, haha.

Also, the article said that the did the study between March and June 2020. That's literally when COVID hit USA. Then, the economy began to fall around April? So, as bad as it may seem, it seems like everyone else is doing pretty bad too, right?

I believe the dealership network is their biggest problem, too! Mitsubishi dealerships appear to be very uncommitted to the brand or don't exist at all in some areas.

Bergstrom Automotive is the largest dealership in Wisconsin (mainly centered in the Fox Valley area). They sell 36 brands of vehicles, & they have a Mitsubishi dealership. They currently have zero new Mirages in stock, & two used ones. Pryme's 2017 SE manual that he traded in for a KIA van some time ago is one of them. Try telling me this huge dealership is committed to selling/pushing Mirages?

Inventory seems to be a very regional thing. Roger Khedi Mitsubishi here in Portland allegedly has 94 Mirage/G4 in stock. Gladstone Mitsubishi has 9. (I'm a bit skeptical on the Roger Khedi numbers, but still) But the west coast generally buys more small cars than the midwest.
