Januari 2013 the boat full of blue Space Stars arrived in Rotterdam

In some other threads I read people complaining about how hard it is to find a decent 2nd hand Mirage, for a decent price. So I thought, how is it here?
A quick Google learned that there are plenty of 2nd hand Space Stars here. On one site I found 1248 cars. A decent price is harder. The cheapest one without 'real' damage is €4250, and that still has some serious dents.
I looked for cars equal to mine (2013, 1.0L, manual, FAST keys), and prices varying from €5000 to €6500. (I paid €7000 3 years ago). That must be a covid thing. Due to bad economy people keep their money in the pocket and go for a smaller/2nd hand car, pushing the prices.

There was another thing which struck me. In the Netherlands a car gets a license plate when it's registered, and it keeps that it's whole life. The licenses are never reused. The licenses are more or less incrementing, so you can see the age of a car from it's license plate.

When looking for 'my car', I found one with the same color, and almost the same license. And another, and yet another...

I could not find any other color or trim in the same range. So I can only guess a big lot of blue Space Stars was licensed on the same day, probably because the boat arrived, and 6 of them are for sale now.

What are Dutch licence plates made out of? Licence plates peel and fade out fast here in Ontario. It's a real coin toss whether your new plates will stay in good shape, or peel back. Or turn completely white and illegible.

Driving around here, you see unreadable and busted up licence plates all the time. Pathetic look.

I have seen brand new cars with the worst plates. People don't want to buy new plates knowing what happens.
I think licence plates use to be made in prison. And the quality control is poor. And not much motivation lol

Edit sorry SpaceWolf I see what you mean, you have 31, 33, 46, 50 ZTH-era plates. That is amusing.

    That's pretty cool.

We need to get some of those "Space Star" emblems over here in the US. I'd put one on my car just to mess with people's heads.

I'm not sure, but I think it's galvanized steel with a plastic coating. If you ever see rust on a license plate, it's a bended one.
The yellow color is retro reflective, which always make it look bright.

On the website of the RDW (Rijksdienst Wegverkeer, National Road Traffic Department) you can get info about licenses, and I found that the whole range 80ZTH7 - 58ZTH8 are Blue Space Stars, surround by a handful of other colors

Seeing this you'd expect that 9 out of 10 Space Stars you see here are blue. But that's not true. Most are grey, unfortunately. These cars arrived before the model was officially introduced here. So maybe each dealer got a bright blue one as eye-catcher in the showroom?

With plates staying with the car (and not the owner), I wonder if there is ever privacy concerns?

As an aside SpaceWolf, I visited family in the Netherlands for a few weeks in May 1998 (not far from Leiden). I remember your yellow plates. And being 15 years old, ordering at a restaurant, and the waiter asking me if I wanted a beer!

My Dad was born and raised in the Netherlands.

Which scenario are you thinking of?

As far as I remember it was illegal to sell alcohol to someone younger than 16 in 1998. But maybe not when he was with his parents. Since 2014 it's illegal to sell alcohol to someone younger then 18. When in doubt the seller has to ask for a proof of identity.

My Dad was born and raised in the Netherlands.
You were 15 in 1998, so you are from 1983. Your father is from 1958? How old was he when he emigrated? I think emigration to Canada became much harder in the 70s, compared to the 50s en 60s.
