At Mitsubishi-motors.nl I found leaflets about the Space Star, and the Space Star model 2021. (Can't upload the pdf's unfortunately. I hope there is no geo blocking).

The leaflets are almost identical, except for the engine.

    Model 2020 1.0L manual 1.2L manual 1.2L CVT
    Max. power (EEC net) kW (PS)/rpm) 52 (71)/6.000 59 (80)/6.000 59 (80)/6.000
    Max. torque (EEC net) N·m (kg-m)/rpm 88 (9.0)/5.000 106 (10.8)/4.000 106 (10.8)/4.000
    Acceleration (0-100 km/h) sec 15.7 12.6 13.5
    Max speed 172 180 173
    Economy (WLTP)
    Combined, liter/100km 5.1 5.0 5.3

    Model 2021 1.2L manual 1.2L CVT
    Max. power (EEC net) kW (PS)/rpm) 52 (71)/6.000 52 (71)/6.000
    Max. torque (EEC net) N·m (kg-m)/rpm 102 (10.4)/3.500 102 (10.4)/3.500
    Acceleration (0-100 km/h) sec 14.1 15.8
    Max speed 168 160
    Economy (WLTP)
    Combined, liter/100km 4.9 5.3

So the new engine is not less economical than the old one, not even the 1L. That's good. The max speed is a bit lower, but I don't think you will feel the difference (compared to an 1.0L. (BTW, in 2019 you could buy an 1.0L CVT here)).
Max torque is reached at a lower rpm. I suppose you will feel that.

Strange - same size engine but with lower top speed, slower to accelerate, same redline and better economy. The torque peak is way lower in the rev range - so the engine is breathing quite differently.

It's almost as if they took the existing 1.2 and simply forced the throttle to not open 100%. Either that or maybe they are using EGR in the upper rpm band which essentially reduces the volume/power of the engine. Interesting. Wonder what's going on.

It could be changes to the valve lift/timing programming.

The Geo Metro was offered with 2 camshafts for the 1.0L engine: the usual one in the garden variety cars, and the higher-efficiency XFi model which had lower lift & duration, less HP, a lower torque peak, and better fuel economy.

Emission standard, CO2 Emissions and fuel consumption are very important in these parts,
because it is base for taxes, and future registration laws shall be dependant on these. If a car uses too much fuel or pollutes the environment too much, registration will not be possible. Pollution is strictly checked every two years. Vehicles that pollute the air more than the new car will be de-registered and pulled off the road immediately.
