I have had multiple VW TDIs. In fact I just bought another '02 Beetle because I couldn't pass it up at $800. It helped that it had a 2 inch thick stack of maintenance receipts. They have all been great cars, but I maintain them properly. I definitely think that is key on a German car over any other makes.

I didn't consider vw's in my post about avoiding german cars. Some models still have their share of problems. I agree proper maintenance goes a long ways but will not prevent computers or other electronics on higher end cars from taking a dump a few years after warranty is gone.
