Duct tape to fix my Mirage. Who thought that day would ever come

I have been living with a half-ripped car mat, driver's side, in my 2014 Mirage... for about one year now. I decided I had to finally figure out what to do. So I bought a universal car mat (1) at Canadian Tire for $12.99 last week. Doesn't fit at all. Eyeballed the whole thing at the store.

Anyways, then I went to the local hardware store, like to buy duct tape and patch my mat that way. And the sales guy asked me why I needed duct tape, and i said to fix my car mat.

Anyway the dude at the store gave me some advice, told me I should call the local Auto Wrecker, and see if they have any of my car there. So I got home with my duct tape, and my ill-fitting car mat laying around from a week ago... and called the Wreckers. Well turns out they don't have any Mirage's at the moment, but the guy on the phone said he thought maybe they had a busted 2015, "but it was a Mirage." Direct quote of the funny guy on the phone.

So my little Mirage is both a joke to the guy at the auto wreckers, and my car has a duct tape repair solution.

Good thing Mirages have been reliable around here to not end up in the Wreckers. I was so pumped about my visit. I will be back.

Hey dspace9 I had a similar problem with another car. I cut out the damaged area of the floor carpet and replaced it with a cutout from a carpet square, then I covered it up with the floor mat. The carpet square was the right thickness and the price was right too. Looked and worked great.

Do you think that you could make your own custom floor mat from a scrap carpet square and a good pair of scissors or carpet knife?

Thanks Eggman, that is a great idea. I have every tool you can imagine here at my house. As well, lots of random stuff left here from the previous owners, so who knows, I would not be surprised if I had some spare carpet pieces.

Anyways degraded mats is definitely a perennial problem with cars generally. Especially winter beaters with 3 pedals to wear out the mats. The clutch really killed the mat. No cruise didn't help either, so there is wear right through the mat.

God only knows what would have happened with weathertechs new 6.5 years ago when I bought my car.. Seems like they are like 30% of my Mirage's value new for new Weathertech mats. So I don't feel like buying them lol. And I had a facebook set up for some brand new weathertechs with a big mark down, that fell through.

Thanks for your idea, I will post when I have my finished product all installed.

I know that it’s not helpful at this point for you but for anyone else reading this Weathertech mats would certainly have kept this damage from happening.

Of all the money spent on improving my car the Weathertech mats have been the best investment.

Ya ok lol. You know more about cars than I do, but I try to think of the most obvious solution to my problem first. Including ignoring signs and sounds of problems til it's too late. Whatever, I'm not spending $344 plus taxes and shipping for weathertech mats when my Mirage is worth only 3 or 4 times more than that, and I almost picked up ones fo $100 in the box off someone on facebook marketplace. Seemed sketchy and turned out too good was actually true, and the guy bailed on the sale at New Hamburg Ont Timmies, where the old school Mennonite folk live.

I hear there is quite the black market for used weathertech floor mats for cheap economy cars. Good thing you didn't end up with some stolen ones or ones that were used by some criminal that reuses stamps.
I agree it doesn't make sense to spend that much on floormats for an old cheap ass car. But I would buy them for a new car in a heartbeat.

I feel like it was just yesterday my Mirage was brand new. And it was 2014, and back then I had maybe 3 grey hairs and I was like 20 pounds lighter. I need to be more careful when it comes to saving a buck. Quality is a form of thrift, and this car mat situation is a good example of the principle of investing early, to get a good return later. Or in my case a duct taped mess.

One commute down, and the tape seems to be holding good!! Eggman's idea is a good one, I also thought of cutting out the bad spots with my square and utility knife, then carefully seaming the whole square with black thin tape, kinda like a picture frame. I ended up buying the cheaper Home Hardware brand duct tape eh.

If you were anywhere near me I'd hand you the mats that came out of my car. I put Weathertechs in when the car was new, and the original mats have sat in the bottom of my spare bedroom closet for almost six years. Sh!t, I might even still have the ones that came out of the ex-girlfriend's Mirage, too.

Not sure about how it is in the Great White North, but floor mats have always been standard equipment on Mirages in the US. Replacements really shouldn't be too tough to find.

I'm disappointed about my Weathertech deal falling through. They are expensive but nice yes. I have a subscription to Road & Track magazine, and Weathertech always has a 5 page ad in every issue, including their new line of high-end pet bowls. Kinda like the Yeti coolers of pet stuff. Weathertechs seem like a no. #1 for sure with a new car purchase, and paint pens.
