Thread: Basketcase :: 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage DE (Garage entry)

  1. General Information
    Basketcase
    2015
    Mitsubishi
    Mirage DE
    Blue
    Manual

This car has been through absolute hell. Ruthless abuse and neglect. I saved it from being murdered by it's owner (who wanted to literally blow it up with tannerite) and my plan is to turn it into a "micro" work van.

    Details

A bit rough. The tailgate and rear bumper were damaged from an atv pushing it out of a mud hole. I was able to get most of the dents and damage out of the tailgate. Rear bumper I used a heat gun and applied pressure to help reform it and that worked great. Applied truck bed coating to the upper surface of the back bumper to hide scratches and prevent further damage. Front bumper replaced with new aftermarket unit and just left the black color it came... Makes it easy for me to identify the car hahaha. Also added a Curt trailer hitch so I can carry my cargo basket thing for extra room for parts.

Front seats replaced with 15 ES seats that I added a seat heater kit to the driver side. Weather tech floor liners of course. Rear seats are removed and I will be making grates for the rear door and back window. Also will be making a divider cage to keep cargo from flying forward. Have to figure out what to do to make a nice flat loading floor for parts...

    •

Stock CD player was removed. In it's place is the OEM navigation system from a 2015 ES and I also bought a cheap Chinese backup camera so I can easily see behind me. I also added a tray table so I can eat lunch on the passenger side since restaurants are closed.

    •

Stock drivetrain with 5 speed manual transmission. I replaced the transmission and shifter cables with 7000 mile units out of a wrecked 2017 and a new clutch since it was trashed.

    •

Eventually will equip with Daox rear sway bar, and Beetle springs for larger load capacity.

    •

Rolling on a set of factory 17+ SE alloy wheels with stock size tires.

Well, a small update. The a/c system was leaking... I think it's because I did a no no and installed the used line without replacing the o-rings. So I replaced the o-rings on that line today, vacuumed out the system, and recharged it. Working better than ever at the moment so we'll see in a few weeks if it's still working or if there's a leak.

Well, the ac quit working all together now because the cooling fan failed. The car's high temp light came on for a second and I shut it down... So no more parts runner until I locate a new fan.

My buddy recently tried replacing the AC compressor in his old Jetta. Ran into a ton of problems along the way, mechanical and electrical. Sorry you're dealing with the same thing. Makes me a little worried should I ever have to replace the AC in any of my vehicles.

Well, the fan failing is sort of unrelated to the a/c leak it had. Just figures that it had to go out today when I needed the damn car to do stuff. Anyway, a new one is on order...

Even though I had surgery today my new fan showed up so after resting a little bit I had to go install that. All fixed, nice and quiet, and the air conditioner works better at idle than it did before. Great success!

For future reference, the code so the Autel scanner can add keys for the 14-15 Mirage is 0A11. That was hard to find. Now I just need to get a key out if a wrecked Mirage so I can harvest the remote guts and have two keys for this thing.

A moderator may want to add this post to one of the key replacement threads.

The dealer I sold it to had the bumper I replaced painted. Looks good! Hopefully they will find it a new home.

Wanted to update that the Basketcase has been sold by the related Nissan dealer of the Lexus dealer I sold it to so it's out there, somewhere. Hopefully the people who bought it find this forum and can be... probably horrified... of their car's past.

I found the Basketcase yesterday! A little ol' lady bought it and she absolutely loves the thing. She used to have, go figure, a Geo Metro that finally bit the dust. Was glad to see it still around the area.
