Keep it simple and priced low for the buyers who can't or don't want to spend the extra money. Add the hybrid stuff to the SUVs as those shoppers are naturally looking and willing to spend more money anyways. SUVs with their okay fuel economy would benefit most from the hybrid stuff. Keep making the Mirage the most affordable most fuel efficient non-hybrid in your lineup. Otherwise it'll basically become the now discontinued Prius C. If Toyota couldn't hack a hybrid subcompact what chances does Mitsubishi have? (Well at least here in the states)
Looking at the specs of the prius(yaris) C, why would anyone want it. It's not a plug in hybrid. The reviews I just read say they get about the same or worse fuel economy than the simpler cheaper Mirage. I'd say people probably only bought them so they could tell their friends at yoga that they now owned a hybrid...
I agree that a regular Mirage Hybrid would/could be pointless like the prius c. An affordable plug in hybrid on the other hand.....
If I were to buy a hybrid it'd be a plug in, have an electric range of 50-100km so I could drive for months without having to fuel up(in theory), have 10 at least a year power train/hybrid/battery warranty, have at least 600km total range and be capable of getting fuel economy comparable to the Mirage once the battery is used up.
I don't care how complicated a car is as long as it's reliable. Besides, manufactures have been making cars harder for driveway warriors to fix themselves for years now. Try replacing a headlight bulb in most modern non Mirage cars. Gone are the days of stopping at a gas station and replacing a bulb in the parking lot.
People have been able to reprogram ecm's for years, I don't get how that'd change anytime soon. There's always someone trying to find some kind of hacks.
