Mitsubishi May Go Free! (From Nissan)

    https://jalopnik.com/mitsubishi-might-go-free-1845687025

...discussions are underway inside Nissan that could fundamentally reshape the world’s biggest car alliance and unwind a key part of its former chairman’s legacy.

The automaker is exploring ways to sell some or all of its 34 percent stake in Mitsubishi Motors, people with knowledge of the matter said.

Nissan says 'absolutely not' in talks about Mitsubishi stake sale

Wish Mitsubishi could collaborate with Suzuki or Isuzu. Miss both brands. Isuzu is now making pickups for Mazda.

Suzuki- Isuzu (non-gm/daewoo) products are great!

I don't see the appeal of small expensive 4 door trucks with small 4 foot long boxes. Although there was a time when I never really got why people choose to drive Mirages either.

I'd totally buy one. Even the Tacoma is the size of a '90s F150 nowadays. I'd love to see a pickup the size of an early '90s Toyota Hilux again. Subaru Bajas were considered the answer to a question nobody asked when they were new, but try buying one now.

But it would almost certainly be too expensive.

Mitsu corp still owns 20% of Mitsu Motors. They could try and leverage getting their motor division back into the fold if Nissan continues to slide in the future. Mitsubishi Corp certainly has the capital and power to get their baby back and probably don't appreciate the chaos of the Alliance. Even the Jalopnik article was excited about this possibility! Imagine getting the Grand Lancer, Xpander, and Delica in NA. With the sporty SUV craze going on, the Delica AWD on a raised suspension package would generate a lot of interest here IMO. Probably just wishful thinking on my end, but a lot of the anti-Mitsu element in the states is because of its associations with Renault & Nissan. If it were to go full independent with the help of its true benefactor, Mitsubishi Corp, the sky's the limit. I can't imagine a nuclear fusion/fighter jet/banking/shipping conglomerate as powerful as Mitsubishi would look let their historic motor division not be represented in NA especially when it was making a small but promising comeback in the states.

Would be poetic justice. Nissan bought Mitsubishi when Mitsubishi was on the downswing, I'd love to see Mitsubishi buy itself back when Nissan is on the downswing.

Keep in mind, however, that Nissan's acquisition of Mitsubishi Motors was not a 'hostile takeover' in a pure sense. Mitsubishi hoped to do platform-sharing and gain much-needed investment capital from the deal.

They may not WANT to release Nissan's teat.

I don't believe the alliance will be parting ways with Mitsubishi. I don't where the original idea came from, but Nissan vehemently denies it. I think the alliance will continue forward.
