That's the federal requirement for a NEW car being sold in the US.

As a consumer, there's no law that says you need to MAINTAIN that system. (that I'm aware of)

If your state doesn't have annual inspection, who's going to know if your tire pressure monitors aren't working?

I wouldn't (and don't) worry about it. I know how to inspect a tire and use a tire gauge. Been doing it for the 35+ years that I've been driving.

Now, if your tire pressure light is on when you go to SELL the car, that could be a concern for a potential BUYER. But, for you to just drive the car yourself... pfffth. Drive the car!

    Simplify and add lightness.

What's the point of this question? Are you not passing inspection?

While it may be a requirement for new vehicles, it is not (in Texas) required to pass inspection.

I assume some shop tried to scare the op into making sure their tpms was working so they could get some extra business. Like power steering fluid flushes.

I found a stereo and truck parts place that would install my winter set without TPMS.

Winter/snow tires add much more safety to a car than a working TPMS. I wouldn't mind TPMS if it was kept simple on cars. You shouldn't need a special tool to program them to the car either. Anyone can add TPMS to their snow tires for under $60 with an aftermarket system if that's really important to them.

Good to hear someone was willing to help you out.

Unfortunately in these parts TPMS must be working to pass bi-annual safety and emissions testing. Failing means the car is off the road.

The good part supposedly is, the maker of the TPMS sensors is Continental. Me thinks directly from them they should be affordable.

    Yeah, no kidding.
Local Discount tires priced the new ones @ $60, so ×4= $240 for all four tires.

I just hope this doesn't happen to me if I have them rebuild it:

In these parts a set of four wheel sensors start at €78.- (around US $90.-). Of course without reprograming the car's ECU, but you don't really need new programming if you have the ID of each existing (old) sensor. The ID is printed onto each sensor. The new ones can be cloned for free by the seller providing you tell them the ID'S of the old ones. Then the new set match the existing (old) set, and you don't have to go to the dealer when you change between summer and winter wheels.
An easy fix that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

    and see:

The sensors suitable for our cars have following part numbers:

CONTI S180052092 (the original TPMS sensors)

    HUF/BERU RDE 040, RDE 043

    SCHRADER Nr. 3172, 4073

I think it may be a good idea to take a note of the ID's whenever there is a chance, and to write that info into the owners manual.
