    Off-the-Wall fuel economy question(s)...

    Guys,

I'm just sort of "thinking / rambling out loud" about something. I'm curious, and humor me for now, I may get to the point of this eventually.

    Questions:

    • If a Mirage 5-speed were driven at a steady 85 mph, no A/C, assuming everything was in working order, could it go 250 miles on a full tank of gas?
    • What is the fastest speed the cruise control will hold the car's speed? My truck is 85 mph, no faster with cruise. I'm wondering if anyone knows this.

It would have to achieve ~27.75 mpg to make 250 miles on 9 gallons. Based on my estimations, it should achieve right at 30 mpg nominally, but I have not driven the Blueberry that hard as yet. The rpm should be right in the 4,300 rpm zone, so it should be rather comfortable and hovering near its torque max.

I can tell you that on my Outlander Sport you can set the cruise control at 90 mph / 145 km no issues. I would assume the Mirage shares the same programming.

I have never seen my 2017 Mirage ES manual (driven approximately 40,000 miles so far) drop below 40 mpg during the spring, summer, or fall. I have driven my Mirage out west (cruising @ 75-80 mph) in North Dakota with the A/C on, & it was still well about 40 mpg. I admit that I don't do much city driving. I do push it to my parents' place that is 4+ hours away quite often. Those trips are mostly 60-75 mph depending on which highways I am on. I have never had a tank be under 40 mpg on any of those trips (about 9 hours round trip)

I have only seen below 40 mpg a couple times, & that was when temperatures were -20F or colder for an extended period of time. Even under those extreme cold conditions, I was calculating around 38-39 mpg.

If my Mirage didn't get 40-50 mpg year round regardless of the driving conditions, I would get rid of the car. You talk about 30 mpg. I think that I would to drive in 3rd gear to get? I am very serious about that!

As far as the cruise question goes, my Mirage doesn't have it. I thought I would add it, but I've gotten use to not having it now.

I don't think I've gone past 75 MPH in a Mirage... so can't answer either question.

Ironically, the one time I went 75 / 120 km/h was to document the fuel economy of a G4 that I borrowed from Mitsubishi:

Sounds like you're planning an experiment of your own. Keep us posted!

I'm pretty sure my car has never been over 65mph...lol.

85mph in a stock suspension Mirage with Enasave tires? Yikes!

I'm sure my personal Mirage hasn't seen 65 either.

To answer the question, 80-85 mph cruise should net you somewhere between 30 and 32 mpg. Typical "20 miles after the fuel light comes on" fill-up in a Mirage is no more than 7.5 gallons.

So, you could reasonably expect to go around 225 miles without risking running out of fuel.

The fuel tank capacity may be "9.2 gallons", but usable is 8 gallons at best. Maybe 8.5 gallons if you're really sure of yourself. So, yeah... 250 miles is pretty likely in most cases.
    Simplify and add lightness.

Of course there are always exceptions:

What's the most gas you've ever filled your Mirage?

I put 8.507 gallons in mine on the 4th fillup. 354 miles. But that wasn't running 85 mph.

I've held mine on cruise at 75 mph for 2 hours (so far). No problems.

The most I've gotten in mine (at the pump) was 8 gallons (29.999 Liters). I've only gotten over 500kms/310miles to a tank 3 times. That's while running slightly taller 175/65 tires so maybe it was a few miles further....
